  1. I do not know about you guys but I am honored to have a Klipsch engineer answer a question of mine. Me, just an old redneck in Alabama.
  2. One greedy boyz had one question answered by Roy last night. 🙂 It's a start guys. Ask a question and you may receive answer here from Klipsch tech staff if not the Chief himself.
  3. I read that they increase the plate voltage. What's your experience? Any problems with using them instead of tube. That and have you experienced what Tubedepot is saying about firming up the low end. https://www.tubedepot.com/products/solid-state-rectifier Bought mine on ebay to give it a try, $5. https://www.ebay.com/itm/403849651359
  4. Does a new member of the listening staff have to be trained on what to listen for? The reason I ask is Nelson Pass said the best ear he knew died but before he did he trained the listening panel on what to listen for.
  5. Watching The Last Alaskans on the tele, one old guy on the show said it takes a few days of silence before you can hear everything moving when first moving back home after living in the city a few months.
  6. Your thoughts on AL-3 vs AL crossover that came with my speakers? '86 LaScala's
  7. This morning I should have mentioned that Georges build is with one of his boards. Much easier for a beginner to use a board. Stuff the board then hook up the transformers, put in an Ebay chassis and you will have a SET tube amplifier that works and sounds good.
  8. In some instances the thin metal plate gets loose. I assume the glue holding it just gets old and starts to let go. Probably depends on the environment they have been in whether they get loose or not. Tap on the back of yours and if they rattle or make any noise they will need to be re-glued. How to on youtube and net. I check my occasionally but have never experienced it myself. Mine still good.
  9. Update. I am not going to tear down the Tubelab SSE I have now. I had it on my workbench doing some testing and while I was looking it dawned on me that all I really need is another PS transformer and I can keep this one together. Mouser has the Allied 6K7VG that George said he has used for $54 delivered to my house. That is what I just did. Fact is I am almost positive I have a toroidal PS transformer from a previous build that would work but those things are big and ugly if put on top.
  10. Guys I have been watching some of those museum videos and on one of them the guy says the best crossover for my speakers, '86 LaScala's, is the AL-3. I have heard that in the past as well. For 2 decades I listened to my AL crossovers and I and every one that heard me play my speakers were amazed at the sound they made. I listened to the talk on this forum and took them out and tore them apart and built a pair of AA's. Sound really good but I wish I still had my AL's as original. All the talk here about the AL's was as PWK use to say BS. And I can now see the schematic and understand the only thing that is radically different about the AL is notch filters to flatten the frequency response. But the engineers at Klipsch decided a few years ago, '89 I think, that the AL-3 is better using the K55M driver. At least that is what the guy in the video is saying. That may be a project I may want to do in the future. Build some AL-3's. I have a box full of inductors and capacitors as well but I want to use some of those Mylar capacitors the Klipsch engineers say to use. I like to believe I am smart enough not to argue with an electronic engineer about what to use in a Klipsch crossover. Even though I am old and have CRS.
  11. Guys I mentioned this amplifier is called the Tubelab SSE, simple single ended. There is no need for me to give a detail build guide on the build being that George has one better on his website with full instructions, BOM and most anything one will ever need to complete this amplifier successfully. http://tubelab.com/designs/tubelab-sse/manual/ This design came about with George and the members on diyaudio.com. I built mine probably 6 or more years ago as one of my first tube builds. I have always enjoyed the sound. This is a more common 5+ watts per channel SET. More than enough power for our Klipsch speakers. PWK said so himself in one of his videos. It is with apprehension I am fixing to tear it down when it works and sounds so good. I ordered old tubes on Ebay and Tubedepot for this build. The last few nights I have been listening to the new for me old tubes. The preamp tube was bought as used USA made 12AT7 for $10 at Tubedepot. The EL-34's are marked Marshall, a guitar amplifier. The preamp tube I have been using was a NOS RCA tube when I bought it. Sounds really good as well. But if I want to try and improve the sound and looks that is what I am going to do. Give my kin something to argue about when I am gone. Over who gets the pretty ones.
  12. I had a friend who kept his motorcycle in the living room of his apartment. At least until he got married.
  13. The first picture is how hand cut dovetails are supposed to join together. The second not so much. Wood filler was necessary. The first was cut with my backsaw and the other with that Japanese pull saw.
  14. I am surprised you have not received some suggestions. There are many tube amplifiers on Amazon among other places you could start with. What is your budget for purchasing? It would help knowing it before suggesting anything. Most retail tube amplifiers will not need a pre amp to drive them having enough gain where one is not necessary. I try to refrain from recommending a certain brand having no personal experience with any of the retail ones. All of mine are ones I built myself.
  15. Pretty much done with the wood but came up short on the aluminum sheet metal. Just now ordered more on Ebay but now have to wait on it to be shipped and delivered. One sheet is $40 to my house. Nothing cheap anymore.
  16. I would like to see a Klipsch representative actively participating on this forum answering questions and possible doing some selling, for a small commission. Internet selling has worked pretty well for Bezos of Amazon. I bet there are some hungry audio technicians at Klipsch that would love to make some extra money in their off time at night. Could possible turn into a big deal with sales increasing for Klipsch. Would not hurt to give it a try and see how it works out. I think the guys here would welcome more info from Klipsch on what is happening and what they are working on. Shu mentioned something about a new sub on a thread recently. I wonder it is going to be a Heritage sub? A Klipsch rep could answer some questions members have and possible take some orders. Just some thoughts from an old man in Alabama. Probably not worth much. Like to mention I am staying positive on the direction Roy is making on this forum. More Klipsch participation will give the guys something to discuss instead of arguing about something silly like capacitors in crossover networks.
  17. I measured the plate this morning and this builds plate is 1 1/2" wider than the last build. The dimensions of the plate is 14 1/2" X 11 1/2" whereas the last build was 14 1/2" X 10". The OPT's will be installed as the last build and the length is just a little more on these transformers so I should be OK mounting them underneath since this case is 1 1/2" wider. Length is the same and an inch higher wood case, 4", for those taller transformers. I was checking for the CCS 10M45's spec sheet this morning on Mouser and did not know Mouser was out of them. I planned on using the ones already mounted on heatsinks in my present build so I did not order them along with the other items. The electronic parts shortage is still an ongoing problem for the electronic industry. Much like going to the grocery store. You buy what they have and not what you want.
  18. I hope big enough. 🙂 I will get the measurements later today or in the morning. I did increase the size considerable on this build. If not enough room I am not too proud to install them on top but would rather not. I just bet the EL-34 tubes are going to sound better with these OPT's. For $20 more a pair they are going to be my go to OPT from now on.
  19. The OPT's arrived from Tube Depot today. These Hammond 125ESE's are big. Much bigger than the Edcor 10 watt ones. Roughly $10 more than the Edcors with quick delivery. When it comes to OPT's size and weight does matter.
  20. I really think you understand what Klipsch is saying. Klipsch is a speaker company and if someone wants to talk about any other speaker besides Klipsch they can take that talk somewhere else. Easy for me to understand. I can understand the frustration many are feeling because such talk of modifying or building ones speakers was allowed for so long but that does not make it right. Now they want it to stop. Sorry for you guys but ya'll have made many friends here so please stay but post builds and tweaks somewhere else. Respect is what Klipsch is after and deserve.
