  1. The 2900 is a great video player for $600--it came out around $1k. It also plays both SACD and DVD-A. Although very detailed in sound it is also a bit sterile for the price in 2-channel music mode. The good news is that it has spawned an industry of after-market upgrades to make it sound unbelievable!!!! The Modwrigth $1200 tube mods can make this unit sound awesome and a real value at under $2k...of course you have to value 2-channel audio and be in the market for a $2k CD player to justify the cost. The DVI upconverters are worth looking at too as they are much cheaper. I would read up on them as the one I tried had some loading issues...forgot the brand...
  2. I will put my Outlaw 1050 receiver up against any AVR you can find under $600 for sound. I have used it with Heresys and Cornwalls. $350 plus shipping (PayPal accepted at 3% fee) I have done several comparisons to the Denon 1802 and the 1050 is much heavier, more powerful and has greater resolution. The 3803 has much closer sound but at $600. The advantage of the 3803 is based on several more features (component switching, 7.1, DPL II, phono to name a few).
  3. My perception is that the Outlaw 1050 AVR sounds similar to the 3802/3/5 but it just doesn't have as many features. The 7100/950 combo should be a notch above. It has gotten a lot of awards and mag reviews for performance at it's price. Since the Denon is lower priced and an AVR I wouldn't expect it to sound better...but it does have more features. I am thinking of selling my 1050 AVR and buying a seperates....something like the Anthem, HALO, etc.

  5. The Modwright $1200 mod to the Denon 2900 seems to be a good performer for the price if you want SACD/DVD-A/CD and video. Of course the player plus mods put the price around $2k.
  6. I like the list above plus CHICK WEBB, BENNIE MOTEN and his KC ORCHESTRA and others. How about a compilation if you are only wanting a sample?
  7. I like the Big Bands that really swing! Some of the others were bland pop music hit makers.

  9. In addition to the interviews he should read some of the Klipsch changed my life stories we submitted for the contest last year.
  10. "There was a good bit of post-punk hardcore around before them (Black Flag, Dead Kenndys, etc) but they never got anywhere near the mainstream" I don't think being mainstream is a requirement of the list although being influencial and impacting mainstream rock certainly is a way to get consideration for the list. I also don't think a great local band like the NEIGHBORHOODS was impactful enough to get on the list...influencial bands like Big Star and Mission of Burma were globally influential despite limited popularity and would be better examples of low popularity bands that could make the all time greats list. Of all those hardcore bands including legends like MINOR THREAT, BIG BLACK, TELEVISION, and the MINUTEMEN, I picked HUSKER DU and the REPLACEMENTS to be on my list of all time greats. Athough Black Flag and their SST label and the DK's and their Alterntive Tenticals label were bigger forces in the hardcore culture/scene I've found the music of the Huskers and Replacements to be stronger....not that I don't like "Holiday in Cambodia" or "Rise Above" (is that the name of that song from DAMAGED)? Why did Biafra wear what looked like green rubber gloves? I have been tempted to add "X" to the list to represent the LA Hardcore scene and even Mission of Burma who was a bit more mature but since this is an all time greats list I though only a couple of this genre were needed. For the same reason I picked only NIRVANA from the late 80's/early 90's. I think they will be remembered heads above those other grunge bands as THE act that started the movement of putting hard alt. rock into the mainstream...I also think their landmark lp is still a notch above anything from Soundgarden, Alice, etc....Pearl Jam would have to be my second pick. I would add METALLICA which is in another camp not represented by other bands mentioned and clearly a legend in that space taking AC/DC-type rock to another level. I also thought of Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, etc. and only picked BUDDY HOLLY. I probably should add Berry and Little Richard since they contributed so much to classic rock followers. I stopped short of putting blues bands that influenced Clapton, Stones, etc. into the ROCK list. I also didn't put a chapter on MOTOWN although there probably needs to be one. Was it the Funk Bros that were so great or their name acts like Marvin Gaye, Smokey, etc? Sure they had the famous licks but it's only been in restrospect that they are getting credit for more hits than Beatles, ELvis, etc combined. They certainly should be on glorified within the Motown chapter but I wouldn't take away from the singers that got all the credit. I think Rolling Stone has been very opinionated but they were especially critical of the Moodies...more so in restrospect in their album guide than of Led Zep which gets good reviews (ie 5-stars for IV). They certainly were also critical of Black Sabbath. What about VU and Lou Reed?
  11. I have compared the Outlaw 1050 to a Denon 1802 and found the Outlaw much heavier, more powerful and provided more resolution. The 1050 is outdated in terms of DSP. If all you are looking for is 2-channel then aren't there some modern used 2-channel integrated options on Audiogon under $500 that are more critically aclaimed than Yamaha and Denon? NAD would certainly be one to consider.
  12. the sub $1k AVR with a consumer grade DVD player is not the ideal way to show off Cornwalls. This combo is what generates many of the Klipsch bashing on other forums as there can be moments of piercing highs. Many like the vintage gear but I would want those items fully checked out and updated as necessary or they can be out of spec and unreliable money pits....the H/K ss receiver may be easier to find in good shape but those early 60's/late 50's tube amps will certainly require restoration that needs to be factored into the price....like an old car it's a better value to buy one that has already gone through the NOS Valves (or similar) restoration process as ebay plus professional restoration > resale price unless you can get a $300 or less unit that doesn't need much work. There are a few modern low price tube vendors like Dodd Audio that might be worth checking out. They may not have that vintage sound (veiled highs and boomy bass) but it may be hard to fine a $500 solution w/phono. My Cornwalls had good results with a sub $500 vintage Scott integrated amp w/phono until it blew a transformer....I liked it better than my Outlaw 1050 AVR which is a great unit compared to other sub $500 modern SS AVRs. In general I found Cornwalls hungry for a much better source and amplification.
  13. cassettes are certainly plentiful and readily available for 25 cents to $2 at Half price books and other used retailers. They are a step ahead of VHS in terms of going through a major purge of people's homes. I would send you an entire case of all mine as I am "tape free". I think the lp is equally affordable, plentiful used, and a more enjoyable media when in good shape. I acquire vinyl but am comfortable ending my relationship with tape...only the old quad 8-tracks hold any interest to me. The one exception is that I have a few cassette only releases of local bands and some home recordings. I have copied these to CD but still may keep a tape player in the closet (with my 8-track) to hear them on their original format. I think many still enjoy recordings on cassette and I certainly wouldn't bash the high end decks (especially the Dragon), but as tempting as pre-recorded cassettes are in the stores at 25cents each I pass and pay not much more for the vinyl copy. I used to let the tapes ride in the car but now I don't have a tape player in the car.
  14. In an effort to make this more than just a rehash of praises for the most popular "classic rock" bands I wanted to make a few comments. #1. Foreigner - how does this band make the same list as all those other bands? I have all their lps and they had many hits--certainly a popular arena rock band--but I don't understand what criteria would ever put them on this list....and they were mentioned more than once. Add Heart, Styx and REO while we're at it. #2. Moody Blues - I can see how they make the list for many and this thread started with a justification so I think they are valid--even one of the more popular bands listed on this thread. I just want to point out they have never been universally popular w/critics. From ROLLING STONE Record Guide "No major band has so relentlessly parlayed nonsense as have the Moodies; were it not for their titanic success, in fact, they might easily be dismissed as an odd and overlong joke." #3. As much as I like classic rock and grew up on many of the bands listed in this thread, I would like to highlight that I also have enjoyed many great bands from the late 70's and 80's every bit as much then and now. I have been just as excited about seeing Husker Du open for REM at Harvard as Hendrix at Winterland. Seeing the Ramones at a small club was more fun than going to see an arena rock band of the period. Just as the 60's had many creative and exciting bands the early 80's with simultaneous release on SST of ZEN ARCADE and DOUBLE NICKLES ON THE DIME were just as exciting and seemingly legendary moments in rock history. Watching Bob Mould lumber across the stage at the Filmore with duct tape around his flying V guitar strap is as memorable as Mick's swagger. I would assume many youngsters of today are equally excited about what ever is going on the cutting edge of music today...something I know nothing about and freely admit my days of appreciating ground breaking "new sounds" are over...especially if it has anything to do with hip-hop/rap, trance, techno, etc. #4. I think popular culture and your interests as a teen and twenty-something play a big role in your favorite pop music (ie rock) bands. After 28 I think it's hard to generate the same level of excite about pop music. I've found major shifts to jazz and classical to be more fruitful than trying to be a fan of the "cutting edge". #5. I don't see how any list could exclude breakthrough bands like NIRVANA who single handedly changed the face of Rock. Any discussion of the college rock/alt. rock/popular rock of the 90's/etc. has to mention Nirvana as they turned rock on it's head--in terms of what is popular and what could sell--not to mention putting out one hell of an lp. The Ramones and the NY CBGB's scene is another example....I walked down Joey Ramone Place in NYC a few weeks ago. #6. I could probably add Dick Dale and some others related to surf music, too....ie Ventures?

  20. I like the SONY RS500 sampler disc with: * Boby Dylan - Bloodon the tracks * Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters * Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon * Norah Jones * Miles Davis - Kind of Blue * The Who - Tommy * Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road * Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic One track off each SACD is on this sampler. The Pink Floyd disc is a good experience in multi-channel. Beck - Sea Change is well regarded for SACD and MC. Many like the latest Steely Dan SACD for multi-channel...somes written with the format in mind I believe.
  21. This modern new $1295 EL34/6SN7 integrted tube amp might be worth a look with the Corns. http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=processors&product=13.1 Dodd Audio makes some modern new tube gear worth a look. The hybrid Van Alystine stuff has good reviews at a higher price. I was tempted to keep my NOSValves Curcio/Dynaco ST-70 and mate it with Mark's Blueberry which has been getting good ink on the forum, but then I got interested in hooking up a HTPC, HDTV Comcast box, Universal player, TT, and more so I'm looking at a pre/pro.
  22. Put the amp on ebay and added some pics of wiring...check out Craig's work...nice stuff! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5700422260 I didn't think I would sell this one and have been tempted to mate with it the Blue Berry pre-amp but I need the funds for my multi-purpose pre/pro+MC amp pursuit....I know...2-channel rules, but.... I will be selling the Svetlana EL34 tubes and EICO by Mullard 12AX7 tubes as soon as I post them on ebay.
  23. Thanks Craig! I never did get the details on all the work you did but now I recall you were talking to Curcio. I compared this amp to a stock ST-70 with new upgraded signal caps and was really impressed with the improvement. I believe those tubes were an upgrade over the svetlana EL34's that I have as a backup. I'm selling because I'm moving to a 5-channel multi-purpose amp with pre/pro which isn't necessarily an improvement in 2-channel amplification. If I was sticking with pure 2-channel I would be keeping the Dynaco/curcio.
