  1. Of course if you spend more you will certainly see that little bit more of magic that makes all the difference -- How could it be any other way ?

But some are able to spend less, way less, and get extremely good results from that, knowing the real gains are made in room treatment.  Resonant chamber and comb filter effects anyone ?

  2. "How often does the train go by?"

"So often you won't even notice."

    Name that tune, er movie.

Sweet Portastudio, was heading that way until I went all full size with the 40-4 and a Tascam Model 1   12 x 4 mixing console.

  3. RealMark:  Always wanted to learn multi track recording when I found out the Sgt. Pepper's was made on a 4 track.  One day visiting the neighbor, he had a Tascam 40-4 with large reels, and he carried over to my house, it weighed 75 lbs.  Lugged it around to some shows to record bands, and was soon recording Bass, Drums, Guitars, Vocals off the board and mixing down to 2 track cassette.  Bands always appreciated getting a copy of their show.  Eventually streamlined to just PA feed to cassette, much easier to lug a cassette deck or two to the shows.  Had a lot of fun getting in tight with my favored local bands, and even recorded a national act (Dread Zeppelin) whenever they were in town.

Recently recorded the passing trains with the phone, and was very pleased with the stereo recording:  It will play just as loud as the train in my room, and even the pressure wave from the passing cars is recreated at volume.  Until one dabbles in the recording art, it just seems like music miraculously appears on your medium of choice.

  4. Yes, well understood.  Believe my example was late 70's vintage, often found at the H&H Music store.  It was very solid, seemed well made (in Japan), and had sustain for days.

Later versions of course were not the same, but this could be said for just about any guitar maker.

  5. Jeepers, RealMark, how many guitars can one play ?

Real Duke Spinner:  Really enjoyed my Hohner Martin copy, it was made in Japan and had a beautiful sunburst finish.  It played really well strung up with Martin strings.  Eventually realized I could not play guitar beyond crunching chords, so released it back into the wild.

    Let's get real....

  6. Sony WM-D3 cassette recorder, one of the nicest ones ever made.  Metal tape eq switch and Dolby B Noise Reduction !  It don get much nicer than this.  Sony plug in stereo mic included.  Very clean, hardly used.

Pick this up to show the grand kids how it used to be done....

Very reasonable $150 plus $15 shipping via the USPS.

For the power cords or power line conditioning etc, I'm sure there's some improvement to be had with a conditioner, but paying hundreds of dollars for a power cord when the house has standard 12-14 awg Romex wire doesn't make much sense.

No worries, and I always wondered about the power cords, just changed them as an abundance of caution.  Then I started rolling my own cords with cheap plugs, not expensive at all.  Very happy with just general purpose 6 x 22 ga = 14 ga solid core copper wire.  Then one day I repurposed similar 6 x 22 ga silver plated copper wire with Teflon insulation into very same amp cords.  The difference was not subtle:  The dynamic character, bloom of the amps was transformed.  Went further and also upgraded the ground wire on same cords and things got better yet again.

I have no idea if others can see this or hear this, and no agenda to sell wires.  Change comes from within, not without.

As for power line conditioning, I have easily been able to demo the difference to several different people, one a musician so you know he had no audio ear, just a musical one.  Two immediately went out and bought the same power line conditioner.  Patience will reward those looking for a nice price, but recently noticed prices for most gear is trending upwards.

  8. Haven't heard JEMs, Tecate, save the recent LaScala AL5 demo, and believe the caps are holding the speaker back considerably, Chief Bonehead's preferences notwithstanding.

If you really want to step out into the wild side, try expensive paper in oil caps, or the very inexpensive Russian MBGO-2 paper in oil caps.  You really owe it to yourself to see what all the fuss is about....

  9. Thank you very much for taking the time to measure, plot, and share, very much appreciated.

So, I see 1W at 1.25% THD,  5.5W at 5% for a fair amount of headroom, and a very nice looking frequency response extending both low and high.

Really want to try a similar EL34 SE amp in my system and compare to my reference amps.
