  1. Sheesh, for a grand, dunno...you may have to go "used" to get anything "decent". Part of the problem (I suspect) is you got one of the cheapo Yamahas. One gets the sound one pays for (except as pertains to maybe subwoofers). I'm using a Yamaha DSP-A1 for music & HT and think it sounds just FINE. No, not fine, GREAT. It was the top-of-the-line Yamaha at the time, was getting RAVE reviews in all the HT mags (which is why I got it), not to mention all the DSP modes which can make music sound MUCHO better than 2-channel mode (to me, at least). Plus you can dial BACK all the "echoes" associated with all surround sound modalities 'till you virtually can't hear 'em anymore....
  2. Frzinvt: That's the EXACT conclusion I finally arrived at, for pretty much the same reasons. After all, even if one does not fully understand all the ins and outs of bass production in the home setting, there are people who do & who will gladly build you a subwoofer for, (dare I say...) even LESS than an SVS, or for a nominal fee. Some day may you never have to say, "More bass, please!"
  3. Considering you've got Belles, if they're anything like K-horns (and I think they ARE), the KSW-15 isn't gonna be able to keep up. I have K-horns AND a KSW-15. While the KSW-15 is MUCH MUCH better than no sub at all, I can tell you in all honesty that eventually it is NOT going to be enough... I thought for a while about getting an extra KSW-15, hoping to make up the difference that way. Then I thought, "Hell, let's just cut to the chase and go SVS or DIY. Why waste precious time and money fiddle-farting around?" I finally decided to have someone ELSE build a sub for me... MORAL OF THE STORY: Don't get a pig to marry a princess...
  4. The KSW will only make you want an RSW..
  5. The way I look at it, it moves air like a driver EXCEPT that it is powered by the air that WOULD'VE been coming out of a vent IF a vent would have been there...that's why it's used instead of a vent/port.
  6. The passive radiator has no driver/motor. In essence it is "powered" by the driver in the sub (the one with the motor/magnet/wires & stuff)...that's why it's called a "passive" radiator. It simply replaces a port or vent...
  7. Not offensive, but this might be: "Hail Mary, full of bass..." Never mind. I do not want to wind up listening to Bose speakers or crummy subwoofers for the rest of Eternity.
  8. Hey Kenrat: Sounds like the packing of the beast alone will make it too much trouble to ship. And a roundtrip Greensboro to Reno trek sounds even worse. Waaah!!
  9. Hey Kenrat: Is that your JBL 4648A you're thinking about selling? If so, I'm still mucho interested in buying...
  10. I've have a KSW-15 for 3 years or so now, and think it's a fair performer, although over time I've come to consider it somewhat of a "beginner's sub": OK in the bang-for-buck department, but chances are you're gonna want to upgrade in a relatively short period of time. Cut to the chase and get an SVS, RSW, DIY, or have Acoustic Visions or Rutledge Audio build one for you. For the kind of money you're talking, Kyle or Brian could no doubt build you a custom killer sub...
  11. I want one of THESE guitars: http://www.edromanguitars.com/rock/west.htm
  12. What songs or lyrics should we play as we bomb Iraq targets? Here's a good one: Queen's "Hammer to Fall"
  13. Kenrat: Craig6519 is selling a medium oak KLF-C7 on this forum for $350...
  14. Hey Dustin: Acoustic Visions should have that subwoofer (5 c.f. AV-15 with two 18" PRs) done next week that you suggested I build. It's been "in the works" since October. Rutledge Audio was the other place you steered me to. Brian is going to build me a 340 liter EBS (extended bass-shelf) alignment for an 18" Adire Maelstorm driver, powered by a 350 watt Rhythmic Audio amp I got on e-bay awhile back. It's gonna be huge...something like 4 ft X 2 ft. X 2ft. Looks like we're going to have to drive to Georgia to pick it up, though, too big to ship (yeehaw). Think these two subs in a 1600 cu. ft. living room will suffice for HT? And could you maybe explain what an "extended bass shelf" alignment is?
  15. I agree. Just because he is dim-witted and offensive to all is no reason to boot him off this forum. He could be a source of much needed fun and light-heartedness as opposed to the sometimes dry but straight-forward and accurate information usually disseminated on this forum. I am already becoming more and more fond of his inane yapping (albeit child-like and semi-retarded) as a somewhat twisted source of entertainment. Here boy, here PeeWee, arf arf...good boy!! Give the kind folks here some more ammo, I think we're just beginning to have fun!
  16. Get crack-baby PeeWee outta here. Or better yet, we can keep him around as a mascot/whipping boy...
  17. Here here!! (murmur, murmur, murmur....) Here here... You tell 'im, Dusty!
  18. The AV-15 displaces 4 liters. Dayton 15" DVC displaces 2.44 liter. Not double but close. And with the AV-15 at $165 and the Dayton 15" DVC at $132.50, that's about $41/liter vs. $54/liter, respectively. AV-15 has more absolute displacement and more displacement per dollar spent.
  19. Ask DustinB, he can tell you...all I know is that they are used instead of vents/ports in a speaker cabinet. I had some Pioneer speakers that had PRs in them and they looked identical to the driver itself except there was no magnet/coil, it's just weight...
  20. From the Return of the Pink Panther: Inspector Dreyfus: Don't you know the blind man was a look-out for the gang? Clouseau: How can a blind man be a look-out? Dreyfus: How can an idiot be a policeman? Clouseau: Simple. All he has to do is enlist... Also from the same, after a bomb goes off in Clouseau's apartment: Clouseau: Poor Kato...it nearly blew his little yellow skin off...
  21. I would give serious second thoughts to placing anything liquid above any piece of expensive electronic equipment. To wit: my S.O. placed plants on top of both of my K-horns. The problem with this was that liquids have a curious tendency to flow downwards due to gravitational effects. The result is that I now have large dark brown (planter-sized) circular stains on top of both of my clear oak K-horns. Now I am not all that sure that this is a direct comparison to your situation, but I can guarantee you that liquids are still gonna flow downwards just as easily onto an RSW-15 as they are onto K-horns. I can live with some cosmetic damage on my speakers, but I for one would not be willing to test whether or not an RSW-15 woofer is compatible with beer...a KSW-15 maybe, but not an RSW.
  22. Hey Kenrat: How's the 4648 doing? I decided to go the custom route after missing out on the JBL tent sale like I did. Rats!DustinB steered me to Acoustic Visions and Rutledge Audio for custom built subs and I decided to go that route...not really DIY but more like Have-Someone-Else-WHO-KNOWS-WHAT-THEY'RE-DOING-Do-It-For-You. Here's the link for Stryke's AV series drivers: http://www.stryke.com/AVseries.html That's all I know except they're building one for me. One AV-15 driver, 5 cu. ft. box, two 18" PRs, 700 watt pro amp, Behringer Feedback Destroyer EQ/crossover/RTA, Pioneer Elite pre-amp. Maybe it'll be done by March.
