  1. A hand made instrument made by a father. For his child is what I consider a genuine heirloom. That’s beautiful.
  2. Thank you Ceptorman it goes well with the Vox ac50 combo he left me also. Over 1000 cd and 1/3 are unopened. Everyday I’m checking new stuff out. Some great box sets too. Now if I can get these old lascalas to sound again. Any idea what can clean the horns? It’s like caked on dust. Or the cabinets themselves? I’m trying Murphy’s oil soap and every wipe there’s more grit comes out. Ceptorman do you play? Guitar?
  3. Please excuse my ignorance I don’t post much and I don’t what a double post is.
  4. Pics were taken at various times during sorting. So it looks like a mess in one area while it’s orderly in others. It’s all a mess right now but it is coming together. Now I’ve got lascalas laid out trying to get them back together. Thanx for intrest.
  5. Day of days. With our garage enclosed, finished, pretty much all my stuff consolidated in one open spacious area,22’x18’. Everything my friend who died and left me 13 guitars,5 amps, every stomp box and Roland GR55, Roland XP60 work station ( and I inherited a third of entire collection.) And today I finally got my 77 lascalas out of storage. They’ll for me be the cherry on top. I’ve bought the replacement woofers and the plan is to clean speaker cabinets out and later this week I’ll change woofers out and pray crossovers still work. I’m pretty sure my cabinets are spruce and since I used them for PA with several bands I was in 70’s -80’s as well as my home stereo speakers when at home, they are road worn. But the scars are memories for me. I am very happy with what my wife calls my home studio. Man caves are probably common for most of y’all but this is new to me, to be surrounded by my treasures and Keith’s of 63 years collecting/ playing in bands this is beautiful to me. Back to Lascala cab’s, is Murphy’s oil soap a good cleaner? And what can I use to clean horns? Any suggestions from the wise? After I’ve cleaned and later sanded cab’s should I wax or use a sealer? Any help through this project would be greatly appreciated.
  6. i just stumbled upon this section of unread post. Definitely still a newbie. i know somewhere in these post i mentioned having our carport enclosed to house all my stuff and all the great gear my friend left me earlier this year when he passed away from cancer. Man cave \ home studio, both....anyway contractors started last week. After so long a wait, windows and door are in, sidings on. interior wiring and sheetrock left to install. My preamp came in after a long and thorough search and for my ears and price its a perfect pairing to my little 150 wpc amp. When my room is complete ill move my lascala's in and replace woofers in them and hopefully after being in storage so long that'll be only repairs necessary for them plus a good sanding and cleaning. They look a tad rough because i used them for PA in most bands i was in through the 80's. They sounded great with my Crown dc 300 back in the day. I had good hearing back then. Buddy, thanx for info on cd player, thats gonna be my next purchase. I will be looking into the Yamaha. I've been out of hifi for a long time so no surprise I'm ignorant of most of this stuff so excuse me for asking seemingly stupid questions but I've seen dirt cheap dvd and cd players ,is the sound quality bad on these cheap units? I need both cd and a dvd player and brand names mean little to me if it sounds good with my system. Ive seen Sony,Panasonic for under $75 ! Does anyone have experience with these low price units? Since i need both cd and dvd player it makes sense to get a unit that does both. Is there any reason why i should buy separate units? Like i said ,I've been out the loop a while so i'd appreciate any advice on the subject. thanx again for advice.
  7. The bomber crew is a great photo. Thanx for posting it Marvel.
  8. Newbie mistake. Sorry. Hope your not offended.
  9. Austin, in your post I see there’s a tab for turntable and Mac components. Would you have a preamp and turntable for sale in you Mac components?
  10. Yes Marvel it is a two car garage. It’ll be 18’x 22’ when complete. Two windows on one wall and one door on another. A lot of bare wall space for shelving and hanging a few instruments. I love that pic you’ve posted. That’s one intimidating wall of sound. Literally! One could make enemies of one’s neighbors if you were not careful. my Lascalas got me in trouble more than once living in a duplex with the nicest little old lady next door. Shed rap on the wall with her broom when it was too much. But she loved Dr. Buzzard/ Savannah band, Little River band, Manhattan Tranfer. That was the lost fall- winter of 1978. I’m being a little too open about myself. I too hoard cords only now there’s hdmi, midi……several boxes worth. I know where are if I need them. Dave I wanted to ask you about your 60’s dream system. Did you shop any retro or vintage stereo shops or go online like EBay? I’ve bought from Audio Classics and I’m looking at refurbed McIntosh preamps at Reverb.com.
  11. Dave, our contractor says I’ve got about a month before our garage is converted or maybe longer, like I said earlier I’m doing my homework. It’s a pity that Baton Rouge no longer has a high end shop, at least looking on line it’s just Best Buy’s and Walmarts and a lot of car audio shops. I’m sure back in the days of listening rooms they would have had cables for you to sample. The only guy I worked around that was into hifi had a beautiful set up. The first time I ever saw an air compressor connected to a tone arm. I picked him up on our way to see Dixie Dreggs at House of Blues and he wanted me to come in and hear his setup. He had all equipment in a bedroom behind living room so in living room all he had was a couch facing two speakers. He wanted me to see if I could tell the difference between a cd and an album which I couldn’t. He said that all his cd’s he coated with this liquid I think it was called Goop? He swore it made an audible difference. But I couldn’t hear the difference. But it worked for him. I apologize for lengthy reply. You have peaked my interest in these new fangled cables though.
  12. Thanks for all info y’all have given me throughout this thread. I’ve been out of the ….hobby of enjoying music for a long time, since around 1995. As I mentioned in another thread my best friend passed away earlier this year and left me so many albums, cd’s, 13 guitars, 5 nice guitar and bass amps including effects, synth’s, keyboard, so much stuff that there’s boxes filled through out our house. Combined with my meager when compared collection warrants the addition of converting our garage into a man cave/ home studio. According to our contractor we’ve got about a month before he can get started so I’ve got this time to make choices on preamp and auxiliaries and any advice from y’all will help. Discussing with contractor about wiring for auxiliaries and power After reading some of yalls post I may need to pay more attention and have more input into what he’s actually going to install. Thanx and again I apologize for length of message.
  13. Buddy, I’m going basic stereo. Like I had in the 70’s. I had a Crown Dc 300 with dc 150a matching preamp pushing Lascala’s. I used amp and speakers in the band I was in. So they have road wear on them. My son blew my Klipsch in 95. I’ve done several intergrated receivers with surround5.0 then a 7. When Bose came out with cube/ sub woofer I bought that, but every speaker I’ve owned since Lascala’s fails to do it for me. I’m starting over with this new addition of enclosing our garage. I’ve bought my amp and a pair of bookshelf speakers. And I’ll add on to that. Once if get the room built I’m planning on repairing and using my Lascalas again as I’ll finally have room to repair and use them after a long time in climate controlled storage. Right now I’ve got B&W 600 speakers and 150 wpc Mc152 amp. Now I need a preamp,cd/sacd player and maybe a turntable upgrade. And I’ve added $5000 into construction cost to buy preamp and disc player. I’m liking at Tubes4hifi preamp and also used McIntosh preamps. I’ve get several months to choose so any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry I’ve taken so much space to answer your question.
  14. Beautiful amp Mopardave. Really looks good without the cage. But safety first.
  15. Thank you JMeader. Basic rca cords from preamp to amp and heavy gauge copper wire from amp to speakers from Radio Shack probably 20+ years old. We’re enclosing our garage for a home studio/man cave which contractor claims he will start project in 3-4 weeks. So all I’ve bought so far is my amp, I’m doing my homework searching for new preamp which I have about a month to find. So when room is complete I’ll be ready to install. Also need to find are a cd/sacd player, blue ray/ dvd player. Any recommendations on choosing any of these would be appreciated. And I’ll be using copper speaker wire for sure. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing out on anything. Sorry reply is so long. Thanx again JMeader.
  16. I don’t want to offend anyone by asking a stupid question but I see so much these days about speaker wire and cables. And prices for cables seem quite high compared to say patch cords and speaker cables we use in bands and home audio back in the day. But reviews I’ve read promote the benefits of these products enhancing sound reproduction. I’m 63, from an industrial and working band background. My hearing is battered. Is it reasonable to assume that re-cabling the system I’m now building will make an audible difference? Or do y’all think given my age and background it would be a waste of money?
  17. Deang, thanks for your response. Hopefully in a few month I’ll be in a position to move speakers into added on room and begin their repairs. It’s been a long time. And I hope they hold up. I’ve pictures I wood like to add but I’m not saavy enough to shrink them below 2.3 in size.
  18. Marvel, thanx so much for your insight and your opinion. Apparently we both think along same lines. I’m not impressing anyone just looking for a sound that meets my needs. With everything my friend left me records and cd’s it’s time to invest in a love and hobby I didn’t realize I missed so much. and if anyone’s been long winded it’s me. I’m new to this tech and forum so thank for replying. I need y’all advice.
  19. Babadono, I’ve not removed the bottom cover to inspect the speaker but I’ve heard similar sound when one of my Sunn 2x15 folded cabinet speakers went bad. I sent to Sound City in Baton Rouge to get reconed and they reconed but said voice coil is what the problem was. I wish I knew more to tell you. I’ve never been an equipment spec’s guy, I just got what sounded good to me that I could afford. I never imagined a day when a turntable could cost $50.000!
  20. KT88, thanx for info. I’m just an old analog guy. My first bass amp was a Kustom tubed amp, its tubes had to glow bright before it sounded. When I finally got my first split state Acoustic bass amp I was delighted. Turn it on and it played. Instantly.I’ve been a SS guy ever since. Every where now you see patch cords, power cords, speaker cables all professing to improve sound quality whereas when I was in it ,you went to Radio Shack and spooled off what you needed. Same for ground wires. Given my age and damaged hearing do you think upgrading chords will make an audible improvement?
