  1. Wheelman, I'd like to add something to maybe sweeten to this discussion thread. We all seem to like ice cream (aka home theater) just different flavors. HornEd seems to be a vanilla guy, sweet and traditional. Keith espouses the benefits of mint chocolate chip, rich but with a slightly different taste in each bite. And for every other guy with a home theater on this forum a different flavor depending on room size and budget. It's all still just ice cream and potentially satisfying according to the selections of each member. I have learned more useful stuff from guys on this forum in the last 1 1/2 years than I did on my own for the 15+ years before. And I thank everyone for sharing. I really hate it when the discussion degrades to "mine is better" or "you are wrong because you think yours is better". To me it's still just flavors of ice cream, you pick yours, I'll pick mine. Hey...anybody else getting hungry? Redtop P.S. I'm a monopole man myself...
  2. Thanks for the reply HornEd. I have seen where others have run two amps with one dedicated to the front effects and created a "quasi" front effects setup. I'm enough of a purist in approach that I guess I'll go looking for a receiver or pre/pro that will take care of the front effects for me. Any recommendations for specs on the front effects speakers? I know you use the C7's, but I don't think I've ever seen a post from you regarding what characteristics are important for the front effect speakers. Is full range optimum or overkill? Maybe just timbre match the horn? Any recommendations to go along with my KG 3.5's? BTW, I'm ready to see pics of your Legend Theater in the yurt anytime you are... Redtop
  3. HornEd, As I am looking at AVR upgrade options for my HT, your post here stimulated a couple of questions... #1 - Since the front sound stage "carries" most of the HT sound burden, do you find the front effects to be active in a "discrete" manner or is the input signal "matrixed" to a fuller, more encompassing sound stage? Is the effect noticeable on all input material or just some DVD's? #2 - In your experience, is the separates vs. receiver worth spending the time to investigate in a dedicated home theater? Is the performance close either way you go? Thanks. Redtop
  4. HornEd, Thanks for the heads-up on the Dr.Toole docs. They are now downloaded. I just hope they will sink into this gray matter... And...just for good measure, I ordered the Paul Klipsch bio. Still available on Amazon. And of course, thank you for sharing your extensions of PWK's and Toole's work. My personal passion for Klipsch started the 1st time I heard some LaScalas almost 25 years ago in an audio store. It was love at first "sound". My wife took one look at my face and promptly found me an exit. She probably saved our marriage (as well as our savings)... Anyway...while I have not yet owned anything from the Heritage series, I do aspire (and am saving for) to one day possess a 3-channel Khorn/Belle system and a Legend or Lascala 6.1 Home Theater. But first got to get the kids through college. Darn those responsibilities... redtop
  5. HornEd, Thank you for your response. You need NEVER feel apologetic regarding your response times to my questions. After all, 9 hours is nothing compared to 9 months, so take whatever time you need. I learn with every post you make and all are appreciated by me and I'm sure by many others here. According to your response it looks like I may have to settle for "next best" since I am fresh out of circular rooms... Do you have a preference for the left and right surround front to back position relative to the listening area? I've heard others recommend slightly behind the listening area (1-2 feet) and some position them even with the listening area. Hope this description makes sense. I will look for Dr. Toole's tomes on the Internet. Sure hope it is in layman's language... Thank you again for kindness to respond to this and many other posts. I look forward to pics of your setups. You are truly a treasure to this forum. Redtop
  6. HornEd, Thanks for the response to my questions. So much to learn, so little gray matter...As you might guess one lame question leads to another... I am using a rectangular room (16 x 22) with 9' ceilings. There are no openings (when the door is closed) and the single sectional seating is located sbout 15' from the front. Assuming a 6.1 speaker setup with KG 3.5's all around, what would you do with the three rears? Horizontal with your center channel mod vs. a no mod vertical? Rears in the corners at a 45 degree angle to the center of the listening area vs. just behind the listening area at 90 degrees(the Dolby standard)? Or something else that I can't think to ask about at this point? I hope I am not being a bother with all these questions. If so, I apologize in advance. Hope you enjoyed the movie. I'm CERTAIN you enjoyed the sound! with warmest regards, redtop
  7. HornEd, Raising the rear surrounds bar again, eh? And just when I thought you were out of innovations... Your horizontalizing of the 3 KLF-30's brings a few of questions to my mind... #1 - Are they angled "down" towards the listening area at all? #2 - Did you change the position of the left and right surround (front to back) relative to the listening area? #3 - My KG 3.5's have one woofer and 1 port. Do you think I would be able to get a similar effect to your left and right rears by placing the woofer on one end and the port on the other? Thanks in advance. Redtop
  8. Isn't it great to have HornEd home again??? I just love reading one of his elegantly presented, highly informative posts. May I just add that the principles he presents about timbre matching, do not just apply to the top of the line equipment(KLF-30's, Khorns, Belles, Lascalas). The speakers in my signature are VERY modest by Klipsch standards and yet they sing with a sweetness rivaling speakers costing many thousands of dollars more. I started with KG3.5 floorstanding mains, a KV-2 center, and "theoretically" matched bookshelf speakers (KG 2.5's). When I made the change to all KG 3.5's, the resulting improvement was dramatic. Now I can never go back(don't want to) and I am proof it really can work on any budget! Redtop
  9. Thanks for your interest guys. I was planning on going to Ebay this weekend. Still would rather someone on this board own it. Bill - Thanks for your interest. I have contacted wheathawk via e-mail. I'll give him first crack at it. I 'll let you know the status either way ASAP. redtop
  10. HornEd, YOUR BAAACK!! What a fantastic piece of news... I really, really, really missed your posts here. As you can see in my signature I am still a devoted disciple of timbre matching. Tonight I won't sit down in front on my modified center channel and have the mixed emotions of joy (for the way it sounds) and sadness (wondering if you were no longer with us). Now I can mix the emotions of joy and happiness!! May God bless you always... Redtop
  11. Ultimately the "beauty" of the sound is in the ear of the beholder... If you are looking for an OK match for your soundstage any of the above suggestions will do. ALL of them will sound very good. I would caution though, that if you want the best and most uniform soundstage for a dollar spent, you need at a minimum to make all of the speakers in your system from the same model series (i.g. .2's .5's,etc.) The horns (mid and high frequencies) in the KG2.2's are different from 2.5's. Going to the extreme of having the same speaker all around just adds another layer of clarity to the soundstage, IMO. To my ear, (and remember this is just MY opinion) my very inexpensive HT system has a cleaner, fuller sound than some others I have heard costing thousands of dollars more, all thanks to the timbre match. Someone much smarter then me on this board (HornEd) put me onto the concept of timbre matching and after hearing the difference I will never be able to go back. One of the additional benefits of timbre matching is that you can enhance your listening experience with small bookshelf style speakers all the way up to Lascalas and Khorns. It works for all of them! HornEd's comments on timbre matching are still available by doing a search on this forum. Much better at explaining than am I. Remember what ever you do will sound better than Bo$e... I only wish to the best in your HT journey.
  12. Colin, The best thing I ever did for my home theater is put KG 3.5's all around. I started with some KG2.5's (surrounds)with my KG3.5's(mains) and a KV-2(center) and it was fine...until I heard what a timbre match would do. For timbre matching the mid's and high's for the least possible dollar, I would recommend that she look for 2 more KG 2.5's and add a nice SVS subwoofer. The KG2.5's come up on Ebay all the time and can usually be had for about $200 or less per pair. Here's a link to a pair where the bidding ends in 2 days...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3076301122&category=14991 A SVS 25-31pci would make a good moderately priced ($550)subwoofer. With the KV-3 anchoring the center she will be in very fine shape. If she wants to spend a little more KG 3.5's or 4.5's would make a nice system as new mains. All of these come up on eBay and are worth waiting for. Hope this helps.
  13. I'm looking for a good home for a KV-2 with light oak finish. Before I go to eBay with it, I wanted to give you guys on the forum here 1st crack at it. It came as part of a set of KG2.5's that I purchased for rear surrounds. I used it as the rear center. I have since upgraded to KG3.5's all around so it's been sitting in the box for almost a year now. It is in the same condition as when I received it. It is sonically perfect and a match for the KG series of speakers, but has a couple of blemishes on the back. The grill also has a couple of small holes. Not bad, just not perfect. I have more pictures so that you can see any and all defects. Would make a great addition as a rear center. E-mail me with questions or for more pictures. I'm asking $75.00 plus shipping. That's cheaper than they usually go for on Ebay. The discount is just my way of saying thanks to this forum and the members here that have been so helpful to me. Thanks. Redtop
  14. But what will you do with all of those new SVS's EAR? Finally going to get rid of some those sub-par subs...? Just kidding of course...please forgive my wise-crack. Tom V. made me say it... I know you have the very best and have earned your status here. I have read and learned much from your posts on this forum. I thank you for your many shared insights.
  15. Steeler, Here's Tom's reply...re-printed with permission... ============= We will have several *small* subwoofers to introduce in 2004. These will range in size from (approximately) 10 cubes to 14 cubes. Well use power amps from 250 watts to 1000 watts and drivers from 8-12 in diameter. We hope to start pricing <$400 and the most powerful unit will be>$1000. We are still a month or two away from knowing how well these will compare to our current models though. Tom V. ============== Thanks for your help.
  16. Thanks Steeler, Gives me one more question for Tom V...
  17. Alright Steeler, now you've gone and pointed out a hole in my research... What's this upcoming SVS mini you are talking about?
  18. Thanks Jerry and Wolfram, One thing I AM sure of...either way that I go, I'll be happy... I guess my main concern was if I decided to add another later, the box might make a better form factor(for stacking). The reason I wanted to consider this option is that so many guys on this forum (especially in the home theater forum) buy one and then just HAVE to add another. Overall it sounds like the cylinder might offer the best fit for me. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing an important variable in the decision process. Thanks to all that offered their advice.
  19. Thanks for the replies guys. I guess part of my problem is that I have never had a "good" sub like a SVS. So I am really feeling around in the dark. I have modest tastes when purchasing equipment and based on threads both here and at the Home Theater SPOT it seems that my needs are at lot less than ULTRAS. $1000 seems to buy a lot of bass (especially when you have none... ), so I guess that's the figure I have in mind. I really do listen at very low volume levels and prefer accuracy of reproduction over chest pounding, ear splitting volume. So I guess I am looking not to spend for headroom that I will never use (still feeling in the dark here). The tubes seem to offer a bit more flexibility in bottom selection (PCplus series) for a few less dollars, but maybe the boxes offer slightly better performance? Still keeping an open mind, cause I always learn good stuff on this forum. Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks.
  20. Hi all, I've decided on SVS as the sub to add to my home theater. The problem is they have sooo many choices. I want to get some outside opinion from the experts (you guys )... This is my first "real" sub so I don't know what to watch for when considering future plans. I am not a bass hog(yet) and prefer low listening volumes (-20 to 75dB calibrated reference), so I am leaning towards the 25-31PCplus for the plus line's tunability with port blockers, but before I pull the trigger, I wonder...in the future if I were to want another sub would it be better to have a comparable "box" style so I could just stack them and not have to worry about room position and cancellation? Aesthetics are a non issue as the wife will "hate" the look of a cylinder or a box...at least until she hears it... Please impart your wisdom upon me and let me know if there are any other questions I should ask myself or bumps in the road I should watch for... Thanks in advance.
  21. rd fish, If you are interested someone just posted some KG4's for sale in the general forum. $250, not bad.
  22. rd fish, If you are truly looking for the "perfect center", it is another KG4. Search these forums for "HornEd center" to see several threads on this topic. I did this mod to a KG 3.5 and I have a seamless soundstage across the front. If not interested in modifying a speaker then the KV-3 is the next best option. I believe there is one on ebay right now... Good Luck
  23. Now that's comedy...the Intel way... Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Moon.
  24. Thanks for the heads-up Keith. I saw that post too and e-mailed several days ago...no response yet. That's OK though, because I'm not in any hurry. I do work in the Atlanta area, so the location of those LaScala's has some appeal...
  25. 3dzapper, Thanks for the input, but i've decided to pass on these for $1,500. Just too much money according to everyone here and I don't really care for the walnut finish either. Would rather have the plain old laquered birch. If you run across some you'd let me know, right???
