  1. Just curious but why would anyone with a good set of mains run their sub crossover above 100 Hz?? Maybe it's me but if I turn my sub crossover above 85-90 Hz on either sub it gets boomy/muddy and draws attention to itself. My Point---What difference does it make what the internal crossover is set at in most AV receivers... I am guessing that this would be important if you only run a single LFE signal cable and do not use line level (speaker level inputs) or are running a small satellite system. Am I right on this??
  2. Boa12- You're on the right track. Let us know how it works out. That VEL HGS-18 should be putting out some earth shaking bass with that system you have if not try LFE out to Y-splitter into R/L inputs on sub....forget speaker level also if VEL manual says no. One or the other should show some audible difference.
  3. Keith- $340????? Good Deal???? There are a lot of people who slammed there fist down after reading this post.....considering they auction at Ebay or Yahoo for MSRP ($750) or higher. I have two pairs and they are awesome. Spend time experimenting with mounting position. Best location will be side walls between 5 and 7 feet from floor about even or slightly behind listening position. Congrats on buying what is already a highly sought-after discontinued Klipsch model.
  4. Boa12, As you know I have the SR8000. The best way to hook up a sub or subs with this unit is to use both the LFE output from the SR8000 to a Y-splitter into the sub LFE in and right or left input as well as speaker level inputs. Run L & R speaker wire from A-terminals at receiver to sub speaker level inputs, in addition to speaker wire running to your mains (KLF-30's). I set my KSW-15 front sub to around 50-60 HZ and a level of 7.5-8.5 and my rear KSW-100 sub is set around 70 Hz and a level of 6 or 7. Let me know how it works out or if you have any questions. The Marantz is designed for the 2-ch purist in mind and does not offer sub-out signal when listening to 2-ch stereo unless hooked up as I described above. Otherwise, this unit is awesome minus the B-speaker output and 6.1 or 7.1 capability. Brett
  5. Boa12- Congrats on buying the SR8000---You will be amazed at the performance of this unit and how quiet, clean and powerful it is. Don't ever apologize for doing what sounds best to your ears (and mine). To all, do an A/B comparison and decide what sounds better while someone switches between the two units (while not looking). 6. I am finishing my basement for my main theater room and need to know some tips about soundproofing and ways to minimize sound through the floors, vents and stairwell to the upstairs of the house....Can't wake the kids and I like it loud. 1) Srywall/sheetrock thickness--Should I use 5/8" or is 1/2" OK? 2) Wall and Ceiling insulation--Is the Owens Corning Pink stuff ok or should I use some of these solid Polyurethane sheets I have seen at Home Depot/ Lowe's?? 3) Depending on answer to Item 2--What R-value should I use R-11, 13, 25.....??? And is one type of inuslation better than the other for sound absorption. My home was built last year and is very well insulated, so I am not concerned about heat/cold in this finsihed basement as much as I am keeping it quiet from the rest of the house. Ceiling will be suspended ceiling (Armstrong or USG acoustic 2x2 tiles). Any thoughts, tips, helpful links or books??? Thank you, Brett
  7. JHAWK92- I've heard of maried guys having a slush fund but separate bank accounts........PUHLEASE!!!!! Chalk me and every married guy I know up in the PW'd column. Slush fund maybe, separate accounts, I shudder to think of the wife's reaction. Fortunately, I just tell her when I want something and negotiate as I'm the one working and in sales!!!!
  8. To all FWIW: I am running two subs in my system: KSW-15 front sub is using LFE out from Marantz SR-8000 to Y-splitter and L/R sub inputs. In addition, I am running speaker cable from my Marantz speaker A R/L mains to speaker level inputs on KSW-15. Speaker wire is running parallel to second set of wire feeding my KLF-30's (Mains) KSW-100 Rear sub is using LFE out from Rear Sub out on Marantz to Y-splitter and then to R/L inputs on KSW-100. In addition, I am running speaker level inputs to the KSW-100 from the Marantz Rear speaker outputs. This is in addition to the speaker wire running to my rear KSP-S6's. The bass is incredible in my system. There is no added load on Amp or sub with this hookup as I understand it. Running additional speaker wire from mains and rears to ksw-15 and ksw-100 draws very little current as the Powered subs are doing the work. I don't fully understand why this produces the best bass but it will and does for me now for 9 months and I run my KSW-15 front sub at 40-45 Hz and a volume of 8 and the rear KSW-100 rear sub at 6 at a X-over of around 70 Hz. Any more on the volume knob and its TOO LOUD and boomy. I ran the speaker level inputs in addition to th LFE/sub out signal because my Marantz will not send a sub out signal in 2 ch stereo via the LFE output, and I enjoy the added punch in both 2 ch and 5ch stereo that 2 subs add. I would recommend this setup to anyone struggling with sub output. My KSW-100, basically the older KSW-10, hits hard as hell at a volume level of 6-7 at 70 Hz. My Ksw-15 is in the center of front wall between KLF-30's and the KSw-100 is in rear left corner. 9. Mwiener- Most married guys would be pretty happy with that arrangement. Your description sums up what marriage is all about......give and take EVENLY. My wife loves to decorate, wallpaper, paint and in general spend money like crazy on things I feel are unnecessary. I just tell her that I only need a few things.....My motorcycle, my audio-video hobby, my hockey equipment and of course a well-stocked frig and liquor cabinet.
  10. Another vote for U-571.....Jefnel1 is right on describing the quiet prelude while the chrages are falling then BOOM!!!!!!! then the crystal clear highs of the water raining down that scene made my wife jump up from her seat and actually get mad because it scared the Sh-- out of her. Toy Story 2 opening chapter. Also the scene when the giant pipe falls off the flat bed tractor trailer and is rolling down the street--not sure if this is Toy Story 1 or 2. My kids love those and I actually watch it over and over with them. Private Ryan beach scene is up there also.
  11. Forresthump- Thanks, I was trying to be humble and drop my subtle hint about my preference!!! The Marantz SR-8000 is a great piece and has an awesome remote. Programmable, backlit with timer adjustment, Macro's, etc.. Eats 4 AA's every 90 days under normal use!!
  12. PhilH, Ceedog and Mirkodog----Thanks. So far mine are perfect and I give them a workout every day I'm home!!!! Good Ole' Liquid Nails is good to know. It's unfortunate about the loose cabinets because I have never heard any other complaints about this speaker or line (Legends). But it is really a small deal given the huge success of the line. Klipsch has always stepped in on this thread and owned up to the problem and went above and beyond the call of duty to make things right with the few victims. Good job PhilH, Trey and BobG!! I love all 16 of my Klipsch speakers and never a problem.
  13. Spanozzo- try the following things for improving output from your KSW-15. 1) Use a Y-splitter (1 Female to 2 males) at the subwoofer and connect into the R AND L INPUTS. 2) Use speaker level outputs from receiver to speaker level inputs at sub. Basically run a second set of speaker cable for the right and left channels from the same location as your RF-3's (Speaker A Mains). This will allow you to run your RF-3's as large and then tweak the crossover on your sub to the best sounding blend. 14. Tbird, Glad to hear things are looking brighter. The amazing part is I have never owned a Denon!!!!!! I own the Marantz SR-8000 and the manual is as I described above. I have found there is no substitute for just thinking it through on your own and using this board or the HTFORUM for "real world" suggestions. Good luck, now it's time to get that 5.1 or for Denon 6.1 going!!!!
  15. Just curious, as I have owned the KLF-30's for about 9 months now without any visible or audible issues other than they sound incredible..........Is it completely obvious either visually or audibly when the back is coming unglued. Is it the whole back piece or just sections or what?? How can I investigate closely? Could I tell from the serial #'s because I know Klipsch had a fix date for all speakers from a certain point in time due to a batch of bad wood or adhesive or both. Thanks
  16. Allright!!!! Tbird1 or Denon owners....Should Item 5 be 6ch as Tbird has it or 2ch??? Could this be part of the problem if only running 2ch? Also, do you have a set of RCA cords from the TV External audio out L/R to your Denon VCR or TV Audio Inputs? This is required for TV sound info to transfer through Denon and then to your speakers.
  17. As a proud owner of Legends KLF-30's I am anxiously awaiting the day I can audition the new RF-7's!! Of course for a second room, because I sure won't part with my 30's. Has anyone looked at the "Hits" for this thread!!!!!!!425 and counting as of this post.
  18. Wrigley, I own the KLF-30's, C7, KSp-S6's and KSW-15 front sub and KSW-100 rear sub. I listened at length to both the 20's vs 30's and personally found the 30's to have a slightly more dynamic sound and definitely the speaker to have if you like it loud! IMHO I would not have paid $500 more for the 30's. I was lucky and I ordered the 20's in Mahogany and my dealer got in 30's in Mahogany and offered them to me for $100 more since I bought the entire system from him. If I were you I would buy the 20's and spend the extra $500 on a killer sub or two subs for that matter assuming you were already going to buy one. Good luck and let us all know what you decide.
  19. Snooker, excellent advice for all items given here. I own the Quintet system with KSW-100 in one room and I own the KLF-30's with the C7 and KSP-S6's and two Klipsch subs in the other. Quintets are great for HT in your size room and weak for Music. I would recommend spending just a little bit more and upgrade to the Klipsch Synergy System 6 if money will allow. Major improvement over Quintets on Music. See the main Klispch Web page for more info on the System 6. Good Luck
  20. Tbird1- We all feel your pain on this one. All owner's manuals for electronic products are written/translated from Japanese to English by 19 year old co-op students who are non-english speaking. No offense to anyone of any ethnic or religious backgrounds....purely a sarcastic comment. Ok, on my Sony and Mitsubishi TV's there is a button on both the TV and remote that will allow you to change the INPUT/Source signal. For example, once you have the cables plugged in as described above you should read the input you plugged the TV Monitor out cable into.....On my Mitsu it has Input A and Input B and a S-Video input, yours are probably marked similarly to this. Just make sure that you have your TV switched to that input before you push the OSD (on-screen display) button on your Denon remote. On my TV's, if you keep pushing the Input button on the remote or TV, they will scroll from Cable to Input A to Input B to S-Video and then back to Cable. I'm trying to keep it simple......Does this do anything??? Maybe we should have a contest here for whoever provides the correct advice to get you going. Good Luck.
  21. Do not pass the Marantz SR8000 over for anything less than $1,500. To me, it can't be beat for anywhere between $950 and $1,299 depending where you buy. Audition head to head as I did and close your eyes and don't let big marketing suck you in. 22. Nighthawk, I must respectfully disagree with Shapeshifter based on the following: I have the KLF-30's, KLFC7, KSP-S6's and a KSW-15 up front and a KSW-100 for the rears. I have them hooked up as follows: KLF-30's have their own set of speaker cable(bi-wired from my Marantz SR-8000) then I have a third set of speaker cable going directly from the Speaker A outputs to my KSW-15 sub up front. In addition, I use a Monster sub cable with a y-splitter at the subs inputs. For my rears I am doing the same concept: KSP-S6's have their own feed of speaker wire from rear speaker outputs at Marantz and then KSW-100 in rear gets its signal from a second Monster sub-cable with Y-splitter to sub inputs. Bottom line: I use three sets of wires ffrom my Speaker A main outputs (two for bi-wired KLF-30's and one for KSW-15) and I use two sets of wires for my rear KSP-S6's (one for the S6's and the other for the KSW-100) Both subs each have their own dedicated monster cable with Y-splitter to L/R sub inputs. The reason I do this is because the Marantz will not send a sub out signal in 2-ch or 5 channel stereo due to their 2-Ch stereo purist viewpoint. This setup will not hurt your system as the speaker wires to your sub are only drawing a minimal amount of current/signal?...that is why you have a POWERED sub so you do not strain your Amp/AV receiver. Make sure you use a good quality binding post/banana plug that will accept two sets of wires for your amp/AV receiver Ray Garrison has shed some good light on this for me in the powered subwoofer section. BTW, the bass in my system is incredible for both DD/DTS material in 5.1 and when I'm listening in 2CH or 5CH stereo. Does this make sense? Good luck.
  23. No hiss, hum, crackle, pop or unwanted noise from the Niles SPS-4 or wall-mounted volume controls. Excellent products at reasonable prices. Ahhhh....I think I'll go shake up another one!!!!
  24. I have the Niles SPS-4 in use and am very happy with it. Just make sure you buy the Niles wall-mounted volume controls for each separate room/location or you will be forced to listen at the "master volume" setting on your receiver or amp. The Niles wall volume controls are excellent and run about $45-50 each.....I use one for my deck, one for my library and one for master bath. Good luck. Nothing but good things to say about Niles products.
  25. TV- What chapter in Super Speedway can I find bass info. below 20Hz??? Please be specific, I have that DVD and would like to use that portion for the Demo for friends. Thanks
