  1. NOS, It probably was not $700. That is what the seller told me. I know that it is hard to believe that someone would actually lie, but I guess it is a remote possibility. I went to that site. The DL-300 link does not work. I found that one before when I send you some info when I was still thinking about buying Jeff's amp. ......... That last post with the Sure cartridge, does anyone have any experience with that unit? Chris
  2. Keith, I am really sorry to hear that. If you can believe it, I saw that on eBay at night. Emailed a friend to see what he thought and it was sold in the morning. When I checked the forum I was glad to see that someone here had enough sense to jump on the package. I really wanted to hear about the restoration, listening reviews, etc. At least the guy is giving a refund. Chris
  3. If it sounds really good, I could always sell the Denon and buy a 6.1 or 7.1 surround pre-amp. Then just add a few more H/Ks. By the way, I really am serious. for the money I don't know where to get a better amp if it lives up to your description (as I am sure that it will). Chris
  4. No clue on the variac, that's Craig's department. But here is the link: http://hhscott.com/amplifie.htm Tons of good info on that site about your unit. Chris
  5. HDBR, If you want an interesting comparison of the H/K SS against something new, I will be comparing it to my Denon AVR 5800. it will be interesting to see how a $40 receiver does against a $4,000 receiver (and no, I bought it used and didn't pay nearly that much for it). The new Denon blows away my 13 year old Denon DRA-95. the older one sounds nasal with the heresys and a bit bright with the k-horns. The New 5800 is much more balanced but the Harman will probably win. This should be interesting. I intend on using the Harman with a set of JBL L-60's that have a warm sound with good bass. it will be interesting to see how it sounds with those (at least to me!!) Chris
  6. I bought the turntable used and it came with the cartridge. I was told that the cartridge was ~$700+ in the late 80's when I bought it. Don't know if it is true. It sounds good. How about an inexpensive line amplifier so that I can continue to use the DL-300 cartridge? Right now I will use my old denon receiver as a line amp using its pre-out to the tube amp, but my guess is that this will detract from the source. Chris
  7. If it means anything, I love the look of the black faced kit version. Matches well with new equipment, but still has a vintage kind of Macintosh look. I know that this shouldn't matter, but it does! Chris
  8. I am eliminating my receiver that allows the use of MC phono cartridges. My turntable is a Denon DP33F Direct drive. Right now, I have a Denon DL-300 MC Cartridge. I bought a Scott Tube Amp and was told that the phono on this thing was very good, but no MC capability. Here is what I need. A recomendation of an inexpensive MM artridge (like on eBay) or an inexpensive line amplifier. As you can see, I don't want to spend a lot to do this. I don't listen to records very much but would like to experience it with this amp. I remember the Shure V15 MM's to be very good when I bought the turntable. What do you guys think? Chris
  9. I will test them with the heresys and the k-horns. A friend of mine has R-7's that I should test them on too. ultimately, the Harman will wind up with a set of JBL L-60's that I have. I know that we all worship Klipsch here, but these JBL's have a really nice full rich sound. I checked the sub and it has the hook-ups that I will need so that I don't need to use a "Y" Looking at these old units, how do I hook up the speakers at the terminals. I am using Kimber 4pr which is pretty thick. Should I just use a crimp on terminal? Chris
  10. Just downloaded the manual for the 630. Thanks again HDBR. By the way, I just bought a Scott l-48 built by Craig. I should be able to do a side by side with these 2 amps and give a report when the goods all get here. This should be interesting! Chris
  11. Thanks for the info, I just bought a 630 on ebay for $42. I know that you prefer the 430 and 730, but $42!!! adding shipind and insurance was a whopping $68 total for everything. If I love it but have to have a 730, a buddy of mine will probably buy this one off of me. I assume that i can use the pre-outs in the same manner as you describe for the 730. Where can I download a manual for this thing? Thanks, Chris
  12. what speakers are a good match for heresys in a home theater. Obviously the heresys and cornwalls, but what about the chorous, forte, quartets, etc? I need a tall and relatively thin speaker to fit in the room, hence the question about these. Thanks, Chris
  13. HDBR, The Harman Kardan 730 that you reccomend has a processor loop. Is this loop located between the preamp and the amp or is it just a processor loop. ie. does it have gain when the volume knob is turned. The reason that I am asking is that I have an older Denon with a similar loop, but the signal in unaffected by the volume control. I need one that the volume control does affect so that I can "Y" in a crossover and hook up a subwoofer. (I already have the crossover and the powered sub). Thanks, Chris
  14. HDBR, thanks for the useful information. My Horns don't have the risers and the serial number tags are halfway torn off. I though that I may have some fakes when I saw risers on others. Mine are a veneer, so I guess that explains the lack of risers. I was told that they are "tigerwood" which is what you refer to as zebra wood. Anyway, thanks again for all of the useful info. By the way, I almost got a friend of mine to buy a Harmon Kardon 730, he let it go at a buy it now price of $89!!! Next time one comes up cheap, I am going to jump on it for myself. Chris
  15. HDBR, Can you reccommend any separates? I see that the dual powered unti is the way to go in HK SS. What separates are out there that are not discovered yet? Chris
  16. My room will be crowded if I add another speaker set. Heresys may fit. What I really want to do is use the K-horns for both duties if possible. (tube music and SS theater) If the switch is really going to degrade the tube sound (by the way, thanks jeff) I could get ANOTHER set of heresys, of maybe a forte or chorous without crowding the room. Is it really worth it to shell out for another set of speakers (this will be 4 sets in this room). Chris
  17. I am custom building a stereo rack out of steel and granite, I will build the switch into that. Where can I get the switch? Does the home depot sell them? Chris
  18. I do want to build them myself. can anyone reccommend a good switch (good audio grade contacts, etc) Or maybe an online supplier? Thanks, chris
  19. Can anyone help me? I have a tube amp on the way. I am currently using a surround receiver. What I want to do is be able to hook both amps to a switch that I can choose sources from. Ie, use my main speakers with the tube amp for music and the same speakers with the surround receiver for movies as the front left and right. Does anyone know if these switches are available (or if someone makes a pre-made unit)? Thanks, Chris
  20. One last question, does the 730 have MC turntabe capability. If I get rid of my old denon, I will need this. (and do the 430's have this or are they all MM?) Thanks, chris
  21. So is $89 for the 730 a good price (it sounds like it is) Chris
  22. HDBR, How do those Harman's compare to old Scott tubes? I realize that this is an apples to oranges thing (SS v Tube) but are these particular SS units "warmer" than others? I have a second room that one of these tuners would work well in. How would the Harman's sound compared to my denon 5800? (my older Denon sounds too bright or "horney" with my heresys and this may be a good replacement for a second system) Chris By the way, I just bought Turbo's old Scott L-48 and can't wait to hear it on the heritage speakers.
  23. Look under updating older speakers under a thread called "need black grill cloth" If you grill cloth is teh same as the heresys, a company makes a similar product. It looks really close, but feels plasticy instead of more clothlike. the company sells it for $15.75 per yard. klipsch no longer sells the stuff. I don't know that much about the cornwalls except that they are supposed to sound fantastic. Sounds like you have a keeper. Chris
  24. They came out with these when I was in highschool. Only we called the "rocord table without a needle" a CD player. The records were all pretty any shinny too. Chris
  25. I bough a pair of heresys the day after buying my K-horns. The little things sounded so nasal and horney I could not believe it. My old JBL's blew them away. I took a leaf of faith and went to buy a second pair of Heresy's, but brought one of my first ones with me. We did an A-B comparison on this guys tube amp. OH MAN WERE THEY SWEET!!!!! The vocals and guitar were awesome, they sounded as good as teh K-horns. I bought the second pair then though about why they sounded so bad at home. The K-horns were hooked up to a different amp than the heresys. The heresys were simply letting me know how bad my 14 year old Denon amp was (and how inferior the KBL's were for covering it up! One last thing that was kind of cool. This guy had electrostats hooked up to his tubes. No hum. Hooked up the hereys, tons of hum. Hooked up my Heresy, tons of hum. Efficiency is a good thing. Just think of how much power is necessary to keep up with those little boxes. Anyway, enjoy the speakers, you will have them for a lifetime. Chris
