  1. I'm bi amping the RF7s with 2 adcom amps, totalling 200 watts per channel. I listen to accuoustic, techno and hard rock. These are absolutely great for techno bass. I don't use a sub for music, but only because the crossover on my preamp is set at 100hz, and I don't want to use the xover in the sub, as I think I would lose alot. I think lots of power makes the woofers produce. I am very impressed. I have heresy II's as well, and they are no match for the Rf7s. I run tubes to the heresy's but not the Rf7's because I want them to be incredibly loud at times and I only have 20 watt tubes!
  2. I've heard some say the Scott 99d isn't very good. I bought a pair a couple months ago, never had tubes before. I've matched them to some heresy IIs. Each came with 6 telefunken's (the 12ax/u7s), the rest are cheap slovak tubes. I think it sounds very good, but have never owned other tubes before. Would I be better getting new 6L6 tubes? If so, what kind? Is 6L6 just not as good as the other types? I thought Mac's used 6L6 as well, but maybe not. Also, is the 99d a good amp?
  3. TBrennan has it right. If you like LOUD music, heavy techno, hard rock, big, clean as possible watts are the way to go. Although what about running a descent ss amp to the woofers and tubes to the tweeter/midgrange area...Now we may be talking the best of both worlds. I now have a weekend project.
  4. Interesting, was the sound substantially different between the 30inch and 18inch woofers, seems it would have to be. The 30inch patrician paperwork claims efficient base down to 15 cycles, I don't doubt this, but haven't heard them in years (I'm more interested in getting them hooked back up for him now). Also, I know their extremely efficient, but the statistics he has doesn't show sound pressure level. I'm assuming in the 108 range. Do you have any idea. I've never talked to anyone else whose owned them.
  5. to say the contrary would seem heresy to many. My wife hate the heresy's now that their in the living room. She didn't mind it until I found some wood boxes at an unfinished furniture store that puts them 11 inches off the floor, and in more plain site. But they predate the mariage, so they can stay until her friends make to many comments...
  6. I listened to them side by side vs the Rf7s, including the 2 that had 250 watt amps built in to the woofer. THey could go lower, but they sure weren't as lively. To make it more fair, the salesman bi-amped the klipsh with the 200 watts of B&K power total, the 100 into the DT + its 250 watt amp was no match. A powered tower leave's no room for flexibility. I think DT makes "pretty" speakers so they can sell them to our wives/girlfriends.
  7. Ah.. the patrician. My uncle has a Patrician and a EV stereon 850, which is the top three drivers, without the 30inch woofer/horn. He runs it on a mac 240. He's had both since new in the 60's. Funny thing, he hasn't had it hooked up for 10 years since he went HT in a box... a terrible waste. This is actually what turned me on to klipsch. Maybe this summer I'll have to hook it up for him. He'll be glad to know these go for over 15k. Was this for 2 patricians?
  8. Dean, not sure if you remember me. YOu guided me thru the bi-amping process on the adcoms before I bought the RF7s. It does sound fantastic. I'm running 4 channels of the adcom into the 2 Rf7s - obviously, no stress at all. I had the heresy's in the rear, but now moved them, as it seemed such a waste. They're now each hooked up to a pair of scott 99ds - something your probably familiar with...
  9. Thank you Bob. I did return it earlier today. It was an authorized dealer. They said it would be 2 weeks or so (they called klipsch who will RA? them), which is fine. I was just so excited because I had been planning this for a year. I've compared these to everything in multiple cities. I have the heresy's, which I love, but in my opinion the RF7s have no equal. Thanks. These are incredible speakers.
  10. Yes the front is loose. I can push on it and it moves. I will try this. Is it glued as well? It doesn't appear to be. Thanks a lot.
  11. Just purchased a pair of RF7s at a true hi-fi store. Hooked them up and I feel air coming thru between the wood and front face plate. I can take it back, and have them replace, but wonder if the face plate can be tightened? Are there screws under the rubber grill inserts. I don't want to pull these rubber holders out for fear that it will void the warranty, but if I know there are screws underneath, this would take a lot less time then taking them back. Please help. system: RF7s rear bi-amped w/ adcom 7400 heresy II rear HK sig 2.0 preamp
  12. Deang, you helped me out with bi-amping the Rf7s awhile back. Just thought I'd let you know, I took your advice and recently bought 2 scott 99d mono integrated amps for the heresey's. I have the best of both worlds now - tremendous, clean volume when I need it, and the soothing sounds of tubes when I'm veging out. Though I couldn't resist the look of the scott amps, whether I heard them or not... 22 watts perchannel, no less.
  13. I just refinished a pair of Hereseys. Mine were much lighter, and I was going to a ebony finish, so it wasn't much of a problem. It is hard to get the finish out. Be very careful sanding on the corners, so you don't risk fraying. I would use 280 sand paper. I didn't get all of the stain out, but with an ebony stain it worked out fine - also I was only removing 2 coats + poly that I put on 10 yrs ago. I still put on 5 coats of ebony. Its a great result, but time consuming. Wish I would have thought of the wood veneer mentioned above...
  14. ---------------- On 11/8/2002 2:17:24 PM Mike82 wrote: I don't mean to be terse, but after 1800+ posts, have you learned nothing? TUBES, especially SET, sound better... IMO, Adcom sucks, unless you have inefficient, colored-sounding speakers. I have to disagree with the adcom sucks comment... Little late on this posting... but I disagree. ADCOM does sound good with Klipsh speakers, at least the Heresy 2's and RF7s. I own the heresy's and will shortly buy the RF7s and will be powering them with the adcom 545 and 7400. Nobody will question tubes sounding better. I've listened to my heresy's with a mcIntosh tube (power and pre) of my uncles and yes it sounds warmer - but that's a whole different budget - it better sound warmer. I've also listened to them on other ss gear (reasonably priced) (B&K, Denon, Yamaha), and the adcom sounds better in moderate priced ranges. Stereophile likes this stuff as well, and they can be snobbish. If someone wants new gear, and has a budget as I do, adcom sounds very well with klipsh (at least the heresy's and RF series - I have know idea with the full loaded horn stuff)
  15. This is a great help to me. This may also explain why I thought my heresy's sounded a little harsh at high levels on the 545, and why in the store (where the hooked the RF7s to the 7400, I didn't get this effect. I'm going to do what you suggest. The education on the ohms is also helpful. Once I acquire and try this, I will again let you know the result. My hope is that with the Rf7s and extra wattage that if I reconfigure and use the whole room (if the wife allows it...) I'll have plenty of power. thanks again
  16. Actually, if I could have any career, it would be in a real audio store. Problem is, they've dissapeared in fort wayne, IN - great margins in theatre in a box systems apparently.... I know its getting bad when all the equipments on the shelf, but all the descent stuff is not connected to anything... This one has B&K and some other good names, but they make it sound like you're really putting them out to have them hook it up... And, I don't know near enough about the technical stuff to know when they're just talking to fill space.
  17. no insult intended. I can see what you're saying though, based on the advice I got from our local audio store...Thanx
  18. Thank you, I have an adcom GFA 7400. It has 5X100. I also have an older (1991) adcom GFA 545 (2X100). I'm using a Harman Kardon Signature 2.0 5.1 processor/preamp. I was running infinity's in the fronts and rears and a jbl center. I just moved and have a much larger room now just measured, 28x35 total, but the music section is really 22x25. I would like to eliminate the infinity's all together, use the Rf7s front, heresy's rear like you suggest (should I hang them). The HK processor does have a dts 4ch and something similar to 4ch stereo that uses the rears nicely for music. I'm assuming I'll need to replace the JBL with one of the klipsch centers- but may need to wait if I get the RF7's due to budget constraints. I'm assuming the JBL won't keep up with the RF7, as its much smaller and less efficient. I was going to try it though before replacing it. It will be ok for awhile, as most of my time is with music anyway. If possible, I was thinking of bi amping the Rf7s with 4 channels of the gfa 7400, running the center with the 5th channel, running the rear heresey's with the 545. I was going to split the front outputs on the processor with a y cord to do the bi amping from the 7400 since the gain would be the same on that amp. (I'm currently doing this now, to run speakers in another part of the room, so it does work). So, would 100 watts go to the horn and another 100 watts to the woofers? Thanks again for your help with this. Do you work at an audio store? Del
  19. Dean, Thank you. This clears a lot up. I will biwire the 2channel, probably get the RF7s to be safe on SPL, as the room is roughly 25x30. I'm new to this forum, and it is really nice to get answers from those who know there stuff. Incidently, would you recommend the RF7's? THey sound much more musical than my older heresey IIs. Thanks again I originally was thinking of bi amping using the 4 of the 5 channels, then using the 5th for the center, and using the 2 channels on the rear. But, as 90% of my listening is in 2 channel stereo anyway... I didn't realize I had to have a load on each channel, somewhat concerning as I currently have it hooked up for 5.1, but am usually only using the front 2 channels - maybe setting myself up for problems it sounds like.
  20. Bi amping. I'm considering the purchase of the RF7 or RF5. I was planning to bi amp them via Mdeneen's method of splitting the output on the preamp. I have 2 adcom power amps, of equal wattage (100x2 and 100x5). There is no gain control on these amps, but since the are similar (close to identical), would this be needed? The Klipsch crossovers are 2500 (or 2200). Is this simply running 100 watts to 2500+ and 100 watts to 2500 and under. Does this make any sonic sense, or does the sound above 2200 - 2500 require so little power that I would gain nothing. Also, would it be better to biamp them with 4 of the 5 channels on the same amp to insure identicality. The salesman said to biwire them, and that would make the amp "work harder" by lowering the impedence to 4ohms. Any thoughts on which is better. This concept is new to me, but with identical amps, though it might make sense. Thanks, Del
