I definitely like Green Day, but I don't think you'll find what you're looking for there . ---------------- If you had to pick one band to don the "least likely to create a rock opera" mantle, Cali-punk trio Green Day would be among the most logical candidates. That makes the existence of American Idiot something of a surprise -- and the excellence of its contents little short of a revelation. There are no half measures on the sprawling disc. Billie Joe Armstrong has created a full slate of characters and given considerable thought to their back-stories -- heck, he even dug out a glockenspiel to add dramatic tension to the nine-minute epic "Jesus of Suburbia." Thing is, Armstrong and company haven't lost their snotty Gilman Street edge in the process -- as evidenced by the snarling, expletive-laced title track and the made-for-pogoing sing-along "Extraordinary Girl." While there's obviously a political subtext running through the disc, Armstrong seldom gets so specific that the disc will sound dated come the next election cycle. Instead, songs like the Clash-styled "Are We the Waiting" and the spare ballad "Wake Me Up when September Ends" delve into adult-oriented emotional distress with the same sort of incisiveness the band once applied to teen angst. While there are occasional lapses into utter excess -- "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" encroaches on show-tune territory -- American Idiot packs enough power, both sonically and emotionally, to make it worthy of extended play (and consideration for a 2004 time capsule). 3. Thanx Clu for the tip, I went online to listen to some cuts, but they must be too explicit, as none are offered, but everyone raves about it. I like rock opera, so I think I am going to buy my first Greed Day cd. Speaking of first CDs I bought my first Johnny Cash one and that would be American IV: The Man Comes Around . I like "Nine Inch Nails" Reznor's "Hurt" and Sting's "I Hung My Head,"

  5. WELL-KNOWN ORGANIST TO PLAY AT SHRYOCK TOMORROW BY MARLEEN SHEPHERD THE SOUTHERN CARBONDALE -- How does celebrated organist Peter Richard Conte routinely make the world's largest organ sound like a symphony orchestra? He uses tricks, Conte said. His idea of tricks, though, is playing six musical lines at once, two with each hand and one with each foot in the nearly lost 19th-century art he dubs a "calisthenics for the keyboard." Conte -- who will appear at Shryock as the first in SIUC's Distinguished Organ Recital Series this Friday -- is the one of the world's foremost organ transcriptionists, which means he translates pieces designed for the orchestra into music for his organ. His organ, by the way, is the Wanamaker Organ, located in Philadelphia's Lord & Taylor department store. It carries the distinction of being the largest musical instrument ever created. It is composed of six keyboards, 30,000 pipes and some 1,000 controls. Mastering this beast of an instrument is a high accomplishment in the classical music world. "There's only one Wanamaker Court Organist and he's it," says Marianne Webb, an SIUC organ professor who helped provide the endowment for the series. "He really is one of the foremost organists in the U.S. today." Conte is also the organist and choirmaster of St. Clement's Church in Philadelphia, and his critically acclaimed performances here and abroad have landed him spots on "Good Morning America" and National Public Radio's "Pipedreams." Conte will perform an example of his transcriptions on Shryock's organ, but the organ there was not designed for such a feat. "I love a good challenge," Conte said of trying anyway. "It's going to be interesting. I'm going to force it to do things it's not happy doing. The organ and I will have a little chat, and we'll see who wins. "The audience is always the final judge of these things." Conte's transcription of "Brahms Variation on a Theme" by Joseph Haydn is just part of the Shryock repertoire that also includes classical organ music. "Mr. Conte is one of the very best if not the best. It's an opportunity for all of us in Southern Illinois to hear this type of playing, and I think the audience will be captivated by it," Webb said of his turn at Shryock. "It's something totally different than we have featured at this recital series the past several years." marleen.shepherd@thesouthern.com 618-529-5454 x15074 DETAILS Peter Richard Conte; guest of the SIUC Marianne Webb and David N. Bateman Distinguished Organ Recital Series; 7:30 p.m. Friday; Shryock Auditorium; free.

  8. Dan Fogelberg: Listened to most of the album, once again his first. But I thought about how Alison Krauss & Union Station would do the songs, which Dan Fogelberg song was negitave enough for Alison to do, who would play the obious Violin solows while Alison was singing (she apparantly cant sing and play), I thought a mandolin would fit in there quite well, and if Alison wanted to credit me for stealing these songs for her to play all the better!

I am looking for something around $2000.00usd max-- pre owned--with or without phono. Tons of them in audiogon. I just don't know which would be a good match. The amp is the Cary 805C and the CD player is the Cary 303/200 I don't plan on playing vinyl anytime soon, but if it has a phono stage I'll take it ----------------
  13. I too have La Scalas, and even though they are not sposed to have good bass, I have had some very good times with bass players riffs like Chris Squire from Yes, Tony Levin from Peter Gabriel, and the Multitude of bass players on Gov't Mule Deepest end. I am playing the speakers with a Manley Stingray amp (thanx JT) and I did get a cheap Equalizer, which I keep everything flat but distend the high end a little. How high do you guys prop up the front of the speakers though I have been hearing allot about this in other circles, mine are up about two inches, I have been hearing around four inches?
  14. Found this picture of a 454 in action right after above post. Don't want you'll to think I am a long coat gun tote nut, I only have one hand gun, and two speakers (La Scala)

  17. I have two NAD DVD players now, and a NAD turntable. I have never had a problem with them. I think if you search the forum with NAD as keyword you will find some chatter about them. I think they are an economical option for quality stuff.
