  1. Neo, y'all drive me crazy sometimes, too! I'm firmly in the PP higher power camp, but I would love to have a quiet room with a primo SET system to enjoy some beautiful chamber and symphonic music. The mantra is paradigm. Paul loves to load his cathedral room, Russ loves his digital high powered, you dig detail and emotive listening, I drag my ears through a lot of art-prog rock. Personally, I get pretty chuffed at how great the Klipsch sound Solid state. Quicksilvers. Dynaco. Krell. Panasonic tube console. Sivertone clock radio. It don't matter(except the Crown.) It sounds great!
  2. Paul, take a look at the topic heading - "SET and 1812." If Russ wants to describe a great listening experience, fire it up as "Carver xxx amp and 1812." We don't need to declaim on the shortcomings of SET! There is nothing to be gained by rehashing arguements that cause Hatfield/McCoy hatred over silly paradigms that one side ignores, and the other side pounds on with a bung plug. NEITHER side wins, no one is convinced of anything, and outside of a few reasoned posts, nothing civil is bantered. If I was less than civil, it is because Russ knowingly chooses to skirt the boundary in his very first post of fanning banked flames. Occum's razor is out, and I parsed that Russ wants contention and unproductive arguement yet again. Russ sells audio equipment every day for a living, and certainly he can do better than create a topic that engenders ill will. As a reasoned man, Paul, you have to concede this point, even as your personal stance and knowledge of physics plants you across the fence from the SET brigade. Let's not argue about what SET cannot do; declaim what we gain from the equipment we do have
  3. Russ, another boring item is having an erudite expert on solid state and multichannel amplifiers who wants to expound on limitations of tube amplifiers. Show your passion on how the Carvers kick some serious booty in multichannel for the following reasons, A-B-C. Make me want to go out and get a Carver - right now I'm looking at picking up a Jolida 1703 or a Parasound multichannel. People are exposed to great sales jobs on tube amps every day here, and you have the audacity to complain that you can't compete! Then you do a backhanded slap down on SET amps, when most sales managers are trained never to put down a competitor's product. What multichannel Carver amp can I pick up, used or new, for $600 that will deliver excellent sound and rock the house?
  4. Gary, since you can't recognize them and I can, how 'bout letting me pick them up next Wednesday? I hope you supped on some crab. I salivate every time I remember back fifteen years - the last time I has a plate Happy New Year and tell your wife congrats!
  5. Russ, when I feel threatened by you, look for me in the laundry room. I'll be cowering behind the dryer. If you look at my subscript, you might notice that I do have some stuff that will drive the ole horns to levels higher than a mosquito fart. I can dip into the Crown reference line and pull out the thousand watt per channel job, but it does beg the question of what for? If I really wanted to reproduce the cannon blasts, I'd talk to a couple Civil War recreation buds and shoot them off in the backyard. I have three or four friends here that reside in part or total in the SET camp. There is no need to reference that your system can throw down 125 dB and theirs cannot. If you want to gloat and snivel, do it in private. There are certain precepts that are incendiary in this forum, and as a businessman who makes his living by communicating to others, you have a superior ability in this regard. Don't try to use it to goad others and then pull back, acting innocent. There are individuals who have SET and powered subs here that would give your system a good run for the money. Enjoy your system, tell us the great things about it, just don't go the extra step by proclaiming that A, B, and/or C can't do the same Why create a bad vibe when you have worked so hard to get a great system, buy a great CD, and listen to it, only to disparage someone else?
  6. Minni, it does seem to come on a little strong. Could you turn it down to about 9:00, please? Carthage and Rome recently have declared a truce. Do realize that people choose the path they progress toward; most of those who own SET tube amps actually have both the financial ability and discerning listening ability to pound their ears into bloody submission. They don't. Some might like wine and cheese every night, some like to sip a good port, but most all love the sound they can reproduce with THEIR Klipsch and THEIR tube amps. I like the fact I can listen to "1812" with St. Louis Symphony members, and they ask to come back for more listening sessions, with tube systems that can be enjoyed for hours on end at lower volumes than you desire. After all, I already have someone sitting in my lap snoozing with a full diaper, and he would NOT be happy at the 12 minute mark to be startled by cannon fire. It's time to throw on "Carmen," I think.
  7. Dean, when you are ready to upgrade, I'll sell you my HK 630. It has the pre/amp connecting posts, so you can run your kit-built 300B using the solid state preamp section! I'm going to throw the Jolida 1703 "wanted" on Audiogon tonight - we'll see if there's any action on it.
  8. Fini, I'll take the trade. You need to show up for work Monday at the shuttered Westinghouse nuclear fuel plant in Festus, Missouri. You have a four hour training class for ten poor smucks that have never set foot on a nuclear site, and then two hours of interviews with the FBI. They are investigating the theft of three thousand tons of highly enriched uranium that was last seen in the back of my stolen wagon, being driven by some dude wearing a dirty turban. The theft happened when I was eating lunch at the local Waffle House, and I had just ordered a slinger and moo. THat's the background. By the way, what am I doing Monday?
  9. Dean, that range is a good ballpark. Of course the seller might want more and the buyer pay less, hence the open market. What really helps the open market is photos
  10. Greg, I measured three different sets of risers - the brand new Mahoganys, the '82 oiled oaks, and the virgin '72 oiled walnuts that I'm sending to Craig. All three spec out the same. The 3/4 of an inch was at the rear. I would take a look at the room Gary wants the Heresys to be planted. Have him measure the distance from the sweet spot(the mid of the couch or easy chairs) to the middle of the Heresy footprint. From Klipsch, find the vertical dispersion (on axis) for the tweeter at that length, and you can calculate the optimum angle to build the riser. The longer the throw, the more shallow the angle. For the factory built riser, I'd guess they constructed the riser to project the sweet spot from 14-20 feet in a sitting position. Andy may have written that explanation for the Cornwall, which would need half the angle due to their vertical being twice as much. How much did you drop to get the zebrawood veneer, and how much fell by the wayside with the normal cursed rips and tears, Greg? Veneering with costly material can be extremely exacting. It's a good thing you're in Maine, so when something slips, you can run outside and scream at the neighboring moose I lived in Kittery and Durham for close to two years in the mid eighties, back when I was suffering from lack of Klipsch
  11. Jazzman, not to beat a dead horse, but on the third or fourth go-around, your horns will sell in a couple days if 1) you can provide a couple nice photos, detailing any flaws especially 2) you throw out the generic price range. To give you a ballpark, a perfect set of walnut Khorns in St. Louis recently went for $2100. A second set was advertised for $3500 in the local paper and the gentleman was upset he only got two phone calls. He sold them for $2300. If yours are the the set with Paul's signature, there may be a premium value, but don't get too attached to reaping a financial bonanza. Being that you have listed these speakers multiple times at a Klipsch nuts' forum, you probably are asking a grand too much.
  12. Gary, looks great! I just sent Greg the pedestal dimensions for your risers. I picked up a set of brand new Red Mahogany Heresys for Xmas. If your Zebrawoods look as nice, it will really be incredible
  13. Khorn quest, for $14,000 American I'll send my wife over to London or Paris with a new set of Khorns, the bill of lading, and she will personally escort the package to customs for your receipt. You will have to pay the customs processing and whatever duty is due, but it will get her the trip to Europe she wants. I'll even throw in a bottle of bubbly for you. Are you a naturalized American citizen, a dependant, or related to one? This may make it easier to get access to a source via military exchange. Good luck!
  14. Greg, looks like 3/4" to 2.5", back-front. 14" front and rear by 12.5" sides for lengths.
  15. Bruce, you mean to say they had a decal missing and you didn't ask for a discount???
  16. Don, the miner moved to Missen, Germany and opened a pumpernickel and braunschweiger deli. Any way you slice that loaf, he got a wonderful deal
  17. Craig, I'll send them up Monday with the second 299C. I'm glad they're going to a good home
  18. Bruce, the Heresys normally go for $350 to 500, so you got a decent deal. Now all you need to do is buy my risers for , say $200, and you still come out way ahead! I doubt Klipsch still uses risers in the cherry veneer you have on yours, but you can still get a set of birch risers new from Indiana, and stain them to match. It does help with projecting the sound stage upward. My wife likes the set that has the risers, so it probably would be a good investment. Great snag!
  19. I have a set of brand new walnut risers for Heresys and mounting screws in an original box from Hope. The box is extremely rare(I have never seen one before.) Looking to increase Liam's college tuition fund, or Dad's jambalaya and gumbo fund for my trip to the Big Easy. I am only accepting Western Union money orders sent to Germany to my numbered account, or small bills in an envelope slipped under our door. We are also willing to consider interesting trades.
  20. There's a lot of heat being generated there - it looks like Dean is standing on rocks rather than icecap. Also notice that Craig is screaming "it'll be a cold day in he12 before I help you again!" No wonder they want tube amps with plenty of headroom, as it is a real bear to get something louder than the wing and crashing glaciers!
  21. Fini, I don't know how to break this to you, but a future career path as a bug catcher or cattle guard, well, umm, well, you make a good Santa! What would we call our motley group en transit, the harrowing of the ruthless turtles and feckless sea urchins? Personally, I view myself as a very handsome blue lobster. A side of drawn butter, and a dollop of wasabi. Break out the bibs
  22. I'll stock up on the neck braces. All that up-down, up-down, side to side motion really puts a strain on the old bobblehead! Yea, honey, there was a beautiful set of horn speakers on the other side of the street, and a gorgeous set of red Magnaquest transformers we met in this bar...
  23. Mike, you're too dam funny Dean, I'm thinking of ordering Craig's first set of available monoblocs so we can have some fun in the lower midwest. We're kinda like the stomach on the Mississippi, having to process all the used equipment that y'all send us from Michigan and Ohio. The Quicks are among the BEST monoblocs I have enjoyed for an extended time. While I do not rotate crops as often as you, I still think you won't truely be satisfied until you have them back in the fold. I know little about them, which is a blessing, because it's like a teen who owns an eight year old GTO Judge in prime condition. Too stupid to fully appreciate what is under the hood, but enjoying it, still the same The day I find a replacement(the 1703), they will be tagged and addressed for you. If you bump into a Jolida 1703 for a good price, let me know. I want to try convenience in a small package with three channels, and this will go a long way toward breaking a sound dilemna for my illusionary HT.
  24. Henry, I already got that road trip mojo going since I already have to drive down to pick up the Shorthorn in Kenner. Tell your wife you'll be back in a day, maybe two, and her eyes will just glaze over in stupified adoration when you pull out the teak carcass and start dancing around it with joy. I'm already doing 3/4 of the laundry as penance for buying the Heresys. I am afraid she would tell me to keep driving north until I can go ice fishing, and then use the console as fuel for the fire. I want to keep my feet firmly on the ice floe I currently reside on Give me a ring if you want to peruse Insterstate 55 in a Volvo wagon, the ultimate in stealth party wagons in the Big Easy!
  25. When I stepped on the meat locker scales holding the cornerhorn, I was 6'3" and 360 pounds.
