  1. I've never heard the pre but Van Alstine has had very good reviews. IT looks to be a very well made mod. I was going to purchase one of his pre's but came across the Blueberry and bought it instead. There is at least one member here who has some Van Alstine equipment but I don't remember who? Hopefully someone here can help find them. Randy

In fact I think there is a complete section on sansui recievers. Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving! Scooter ---------------- Thanks to all. Ended up replacing R33,R34,R39 and R40. 33 and 34 were both open. 39 and 40 looked bad, the coating was coming off. Sounds pretty good on the little radio shack speakers that i was willing to sacrifice, it wasn't going near the lascala's.Still a little cleaning to do. Thanks again, RAndy
  3. Welcome Kevin, I'd listen to them for awhile to get a feel for their sound before changing anything. Hang around here for a couple of months and pick some brains, maybe a couple of searches on the topics you are interested in before doing anything. Randy

Supposed to be 150 ro 180 and if they are over 200 replace. Also recomended to recap but this isn't mine and I don't believe my friend would want to go to all that expense. again thanks to all, Randy Randy the 2 resistors that were bad are marked R33 and R34 on the driver board they are at the bottom of the driver board. They are 1/4watt x 180 OHM resistors. I replaced them with 1/2watt x 180 OHM resistors that is what a guy on audiokarma said to do. Randy I have plenty extra 1/2 watt x 180 ohm resistors if you need a couple let me know I will send you a few for free. ---------------- Thanks but I'll try RS first instead of waiting for snail mail,my wife wants the coffee table back.
  5. Bob, both tweeters going at the same time? I'd think twice before going to the expense of new tweeters without at least a basic check on the amps.
  6. I realize that clipping is more likely to occur with an underpowered amp that is why I was curious about his blowing his tweeters. I built a Hafler 220 years ago and altho I did take out a woofer the tweeters never fried and that was with some serious abuse. Hence the 150 watts should be more than enough to get great sound from his speakers. The Hafler and Lascala's together at near full output would drive the Mrs. out of the house and put me in lala land. Have beer no Fear. I don't listen at the same volumes as I used to but still like it loud. Maybe his amp is clipping at a lower output than design, something gone bad? There are too many variables to guess. I was just kidding around in good fun with your taste in loud music but I'd have my amp checked while the tweeters are being replaced or fixed. Good Luck, Randy
  7. D-Man, if you don't want to bias get a Mac. lol. I like my pre and amp both tubed but I'm sure there are many SS pre's and amps I'd enjoy also. The best I've heard yet is a Blueberry pre and Mac-60 setup but I'm biased, pun intended. Here is to enjoying the system you have. Randy
  8. Great article, here's to better speakers! Happy Thanksgiving all. Randy

IT needed two resistors replaced on the driver board (its the board that stands vertical and is held in place with a bracket near the back of the unit) one resistor was open and another one was out of tolerance. This protection light flashing red is a common problem with the sansui 9090 and 9090db recievers. If you are lucky this might be a simple and very jeep fix. I dont know for sure if the 9090 and the 9090db have the same driver boards or not thow. Also take the bottom cover off and check the two fuses on the protection board make sure they are good. Some models have fuses there on that board and some dont have any fuses at all from what I hear. Good luck, hope you can get the 9090 up and running. ---------------- Thanks Arfz, went to audiokarma and was wandering around and read up on the problem.Same sugestions as you are recomending. I would say the biggest I would want would be 24-36 high, no more than 18 wide, and no more than 18 deep. What speaker fits this category? Also, are the people on this Klipsch site only interested in Klipsch speakers--do they have any interest in other brands? PL ---------------- As I'm sure you've noticed it is a Klipsch site. Therefore most here probably have some interest in the sound of Klipsch speakers although not all. It seems that you have had a good experience with Klipsch as you bought a pair. Can anyone help with the sizes? I believe Cornwalls fit your depth and width(a little too wide,24")but aren't they closer to 48 inches tall? I believe they'd sound closest to your Lascala's.
  12. What are the highest watt rated Klipsch availiable? This man has a serious problem with volume. God bless him! All kidding aside,if lascalas or khorns are not enough go to the pro side of this site and check out their theatre systems.I'll eat my hat if you can't find one to blow your ears out there. I mean, make yourself happy.I love to crank mine too but really don't know why 150 good watts is not enough for you, normally that would be enough?!for anybody unless they are going into clipping and frying the tweets.I had a 115 watt per channel SS years ago on my first lascalas and they would move your pant legs at a 14 foot listening distance. Never blew any tweets with that setup. My new setup uses only 60 watts and I don't think any more would help out here, I can't turn it up all the way without brain damage.
  13. A friend brought over his receiver for me to look at. It is dead. I'd hoped to find a fuse problem. The protection light is flashing and I can't get anything out of it. Checked the 6 fuses that are visable and they are ok. Any idea on where to look next? Thanks randy
  14. What would the gear here run? Not including all the work he's had done to the room? I've never seen power cables like he's running, rectangular? I've seen someone say 70,000 for his turntable? HOLY FRIJOLY (sp?)
  15. Hopefully you can find a pair closer to New York

I enjoyed these in a huge room when I lived in MI, but since '91 they have been in storage. I thought I would be able to use them in a house I just built in NM, but they are just too big. I always liked these speakers, because they filled the room with music without having to play them loud (what I, a non-audiophile, would call the difference between loudness and volume). I stupidly tried to sand off the stain that was on them, and went beneath the thin veneer; they are raw wood now. Mechanically (if that's the word), they are fine, and if you play a CD with the diffenet cycles per second tones, they perform as they always have-superbly. With this in mind: 1. How much should I expect to sell these speakers for and where is the best place to market them? Would you paint them or have them covered in another veneer to increase their value? 2. If you were going to replace them with any brand 2 channel speakers and wanted to spend no more than $1000, what would you buy? Keep in mind that I don't discern higher frequencies very well and that I listen mostly to classic rock and blues and at not very loud levels. ---------------- Is room the reason you're selling them? If so the Cornwalls may fit into your space better. What is the limit on speaker size? H x W x Depth? That will help someone trying to help you. I believe you came to the right place to sell them. The members here are pretty topnotch. Pictures would help with the pricing. From your description of the damage I believe around 500 dollars would be a fair price but that is my opinion only. I'm sure other members will chime in with their opinions also. Don't want to be redundent but again PICS are the way to go with pricing. I think if size is the reason you want different speakers then a set of used Heritage speakers that will fit into your room would be my choice. Painting them would be risky as unless you are experienced you may make a bad job worse. Your choice of color may not be someone elses cup of tea. Veneering them would either be time consuming if you are doing them yourself or expensive to have someone else do them. Worth it,I don't know. I wish you the best, give some more info and pics and I'm sure some other more knowledgeable members will help, Randy
  17. Neo, good points for those of us who are non believers. Cables do make a small difference in my opinion but I believe a $5 dollar pair has just as good a chance of sounding better with any given system than an $11,000 dollar pair. From my understanding it is about real differences in impedance and other such vagaries that match or complement your amps and pre's. This is just my opinion and I would not buy an $11,000 dollars pair of wires unless there was an extremely attractive female attached to one end even if I were Bill Gates. And maybe not then, depends on the baggage attached. There is no way everyone is going to agree on this, duh,I'm stating the obvious that means that the Edmund Fitzgerald porter from Great Lakes Brewing is fogging my mind, and it is fine! Randy edit, the toshiba just bit the dust, cheap ba*tard

Most puzzling.... ---------------- Dammit, just erased everything I had written! Max is there a small window under your address bar that says xxx blocked or does it say site popups allowed? If you click it will change, you need to let popups in to take advantage (?) of some of the ads and some of the sites. Randy I think it has something to do with the upgrades to microsoft.
  19. They look great. Did I miss your asking price? Need glasses but won't admit it yet.
  20. If you'd put a pic or two up and let us know the price it would help you get a buyer. Also the numbers on the back would let someone figure out the year they were made. Back to the pics a good one from the backside would answer alot of questions you will be asked. Peace, Randy
  21. The McIntosh dealer in Knoxville will sell you some Mac tube gear.Tom is the owners name and he owns some that he uses personally. You can try calling him and seeing if he'll bring them in for you to listen to. I don't believe he has any on the floor right now. Have his number at work but not here at home. Randy
  22. Does this also have the Rega tonearm? I have never listened to the Rega but it sure has had alot of good press. I would imagine that it is well worth the price. The Shure V-15 is a fine cartridge in my mind. I believe you can also upgrade the tip when yours is worn out to the type V. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that forum members. I'd take a listen if it were me. Randy NAD 533 turntable, with upgraded acrylic platter, arm stub, and tonearm weight. The NAD 533 is the same table as the Rega P2. With the upgrades, it is comparable to the $750 Rega P3, and it is an amazing value. The turntable does not include a cartridge. I can demo the table for you with a Denon DL-103R cartridge, and I have a new sealed Denon DL-103 cartridge available for $175 if you are interested. or a
  23. Max, it's probably because you used the word beggars instead of buggers. It's very confusing to us english speakers. You are way ahead of me in the electronic gadgets and how to use them. Congratulations. Randy
  24. I've been using lascalas as stands for my amps for years and haven't had any problems yet. Altho I agree there would be better places for them. Guess I'd better get busy and build some vibration isolators! I'll take pics if I get them going. Randy
