WMcD
I'm bumping this up from eight years ago. Both stories have a surprise ending. Both investigate misgivings and challenges about the spirit of the season. The 0. Henry is is so widely know that this it is lampooned in literary circles. In my view it is as charming as any Christmas tale. The A.C. Clarke appeared in Reader's Digest. By this it could be associated with the trite. I leave it to you. It is great writing and a discussion of challenges to faith. Maybe it shouldn't be in technical posts these days. But back then I was posting technical articles in a bunch of "weekend reading" posts by me. So it was a bit of a change of theme diversion back then. No one responded so it was a dud or too puzzling to cause a reply. WMcD
DizRotus
I was kept awake all night in a hotel by a women in the next room eating candy. She kept moaning, "Oh Henry." But seriously, the A.C. Clarke is new to me and the other is always worth a read at this time of year. Thanks.
DizRotus
The Clarke story was good, but the end was not a surprise, given the season and its Reader's Digest origin.
Marvel
Great stories, both, but Clarke's is rather ironic considering he was an athiest. Then again, writers often aren't writing from their own beliefs. That's one of the things that made Clarke so good.
