tommyboy
I'm trying to help a co-worker out. His receiver is 6 ohms. He's in the market for some new speakers, and I'm trying to talk him into Klipsch, and had him over just now for a demo. I think he's convinced, but does NOT want to buy a new receiver. I brought to his attention that it may be bad to mix 8 ohm speakers with a 6 ohm amp; so I turn to you for help...............
Guest " "
if we assume that the amp is designed for a 6 ohm load...putting an 8 ohm speaker system is not a problem at all....just one per channel though.
tommyboy
one speaker per channel? I'm sure he's not going to have more than one hooked up to each channel....... Thanks speakerfritz. I just want to make sure; i don't want him to blow his receiver up
BLSamuel
I wouldn't worry about him blowing his receiver up. An amp that can handle a 6 ohm load is much better than one that can only handle an 8 ohm load. Better yet if it can handle 4 ohm and even 2 ohm and lower loads. 6 ohms ratings became popular somewhat recently I think when that's the rating used for THX certification. wuzzzer
I've never heard of it being a problem using a speaker that has a higher numerical ohm rating than the amplifier's recommended ohm rating. A speaker that's numerically lower on the other hand might cause some issues. On my Onkyo the setup menu lets you choose only between 4 and 6 ohm. tommyboy
Well, I told him he's good to go. I emailed him this link also. He said once he gets his tax return, we're going "shopping"! It'lll probably be an all day thing; as he doesn't really know anything about anything audio related when it comes to hookups and all. He's buying me lunch at a place of my choice though!
