No I think he means acoustic amp.

Remember those old gramophones had no amplifiers in them so the designers used all manner of horns coupled mechanically to the throat of the horns to increase the small amount of sound generated on the pickup's diaphragm.

I once had an old gramophone in my second hand store that could play so loudly that conversation was difficult anywhere within 10 feet.
