NOZ Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 So I go to a place near by which is kind of a recycling place that sells stuff that people drop off to them. I find this pair of bookshelf speakers amongst a whole bunch of crap speakers. I look at them carefully, no labels, I have no idea what they are, but the build quality was very good and they are in great shape. I knew they were vintage so I grabbed them. I get them home and open them up and find out they are university. I thought to myself, what a score. Then I go diggin around to see if I can find anything on the and stumble on this: http://cgi.ebay.ca/1962-University-Mini-Flex-speakers-sound-like-this-Ad-/380205101949?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item5885fd737d I'll add a couple of more pics. I'll test them out tonight, hope they work, almost 50 years old. 1 Quote
BLSamuel Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 So they must be University Mini Flex according to the eBay ad. They sure look cool and appear to be in excellent shape. Are the holes on the back for level adjustments? Maybe with a screwdriver? Quote
whamo Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 I really don't think they used MDF back then. They might have. I myself think they're a DIY cabinet with those parts. Let's see who chimes in on this. Meanwhile I'll wiki MDF. Not. Quote
whamo Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 After looking again I'm probably wrong. They do match the ad pretty good. O.K. I'll shut up then. Quote
fini Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 whammo, that's particleboard, not mdf. PB has been around as long as PBJ sandwiches. Well, since the mid-40s anyway. NOZ you might want to replace those caps in the crossovers... Quote
NOZ Posted June 19, 2010 Author Posted June 19, 2010 Ok, I get them home, and they work perfectly!!!!! The holes in the back are pot adjustments for "Presence" and "Brightness". I took all the speakers out and even the woofer surrounds are intact with no tears.(a little dry though) They sound very crisp and clear. (Klipsh heritage sounding) but do lack a little low end. Fini, for sure the caps need replacing. Probably dry as a bone after 50 years. 1 Quote
Boxx Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Great looking speakers.. What a find! How do you plan on putting them into service? Quote
NOZ Posted June 24, 2010 Author Posted June 24, 2010 JB, Now that I think of it, it may well be an asbestos damper inside. And here I am just playin around with it. Boxx, I think I'm going to get a nice little tube amp and hook them up in the garage. 1 Quote
