Disco_Stu
I needed to check if my R*-3 series was okay since my receiver recently melted away. On the spec sheet here at klipsch.com the speakers are listed at 8 ohms, but when I check with my voltmeter set at resistance measuring I get 4 ohms?! What am I not gettin here? lynnm
Your are actually reading the D.C. resistance of the voice coil and not the A.C. impedance of the speaker which is the resistance that the speaker presents to an alternating current flow such as a signal from an amplifier. To measure A.C. impedance requires the use of specialized equipment. The fact that your speaker's voice coil is showing continuity indicates that it is probably OK. The best test would be to connect it to another amp and give it a listen. ------------------ It is meet to recall that the Great Green Heron rarely flies upside down in the moonlight - (Foo Ling ca.1900) This message has been edited by lynnm on 04-02-2002 at 01:26 PM
kenratboy
My 8 ohm JBL Pro sub measures 4.5 ohms when I use a volt-ohm meter on it. I have a 4" 4 ohm speaker that measures 5 ohms when I test it. No way to tell, gotta trust the manufacturer I guess--- ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come. pzannucci
Impedance is nominal and changes with frequency. Typically speakers will have a lower DC resistance (as checked with a volt meter) than their impedance. Peter Z.
jnorv
what does it take to measure the impedence vs. freq? I can get the magnitude with an AC voltmeter and amp meter. What does it take to find the phase angle? J Norvell
Malcolm
I cannot imagine why anyone would want to measure speaker impedance unless they are a speaker engineer or just have too much time on their hands. But for anyone who does, the link below explains speaker impedance and gives a rudimentary way to measure it: http://www.epanorama.net/documents/audio/speaker_impedance.html
j-malotky
Malcolm Thanks for the link. I am building a speaker out of individual various assorted Klipsch drivers. I am measuring each driver individually, then calculating the "overall" impediance. The best way to resolve this is to have an amplifier that can run at any impediance - Just in case your total is 4.5 or 6.2 or whatever. Disco_Stu
Much thanks everyone. It seems that this has also helped j-malotky in his hobby. ------------------ Dual PIII 733 mhz, 128 RDRAM, Elsa GeFORCE 2 Ultra, 40 GHD, 12x CDRW, DVD, Philips AE, Klipsch 4.
kenratboy
Disco_Stu: ONLY 128 MB of RDRAM? WTF is wrong with you!!! Go to pricewatch.com and get 2X256MB for less than $150!!! NOW!!! Everything else is cool. Anyway, I don't know how impedance "actually" works, I guess it changes with passive/active loads. Like i said, the specs should tell all. I know some speakers drop during certain loads. ------------------ Receiver: Sony STR-DE675 CD player: Sony CDP-CX300 Turntable: Technics SL-J3 with Audio-Technica TR485U Speakers: JBL HLS-610 Subwoofer: JBL 4648A-8 Sub amp: Parts Express 180 watt Center/surrounds: Teac 3-way bookshelfs Yes, it sucks, but better to come.
