  3. I forget the reasoning but it was legit that DTS had a slight edge in 'quality' however the differences are so small that most people cannot tell the difference. I got this bit from http://www.audioholics.com/DDvsDTS.htm In order to minimize the limited space allocated on a DVD for audio soundtracks, DD and DTS utilize lossy data reduction algorithms, which reduce the number of bits needed to encode an audio signal. DD compresses a 5.1 channel surround track to 384 kbps to 448 kbps (DVD Standard limited, DD has the potential of up to 640 kbps) while DTS uses much higher bit rates up to 1.4 Mbps for CD's / LD's and 1.5 Mbps for DVD. A higher bit rate must imply DTS will be superior sounding right? In theory, the less compression used in the encoding process, the more realistic the sound will be, as it will better represent the original source. DD tends to boast that its encoding method is more efficient than DTS and thus does not require the extra bit rates. However, even if DD is slightly more efficient, it is still not 1.5 / .448 = 3.35 times more efficient.. However, both DD & DTS will boast data rates, efficiency, etc, but what actually translates to better sound is a very ambiguous matter as there are more factors involved here that goes beyond the scope of this article. 4. Does it pop when you are playing something or when it is sitting there getting no signal. That's my problem, with no inputs and it just sitting there it just pops away...wierd. ------------------ Dual PIII 733 mhz, 128 RDRAM, Elsa GeFORCE 2 Ultra, 40 GHD, 12x CDRW, DVD, Philips AE, Klipsch 4.1
  5. Hook me up. Thanks. ------------------ Dual PIII 733 mhz, 128 RDRAM, Elsa GeFORCE 2 Ultra, 40 GHD, 12x CDRW, DVD, Philips AE, Klipsch 4.1
  6. kaapong, Yes the CD Rom does convert the signal to analog. However using a sound card allows manipulation of the sound via equalizers and other sound card features that could 'enhance' your listening of the CD. 10. I needed to check if my R*-3 series was okay since my receiver recently melted away. On the spec sheet here at klipsch.com the speakers are listed at 8 ohms, but when I check with my voltmeter set at resistance measuring I get 4 ohms?! What am I not gettin here? Blue skies, Stu
  11. I was busy out and about the dorm and I wanted to hear my R*-3 system as I wandered the halls. So I turned up my Yamaha RX-v1000 to 85% and popped in Metallica's Load cd. After 20 minutes it just shut off. There was an enormous amount of heat coming from it. So I put a fan on the top blowing air onto the heatsink for an hour, came back and it wouldn't turn on. So now I must go an see if I can get it fixed. Anyone else have a problem with their Yamaha receivers overheating? 12. I wouldn't think so. Plus you could go inside it later and replace the wire with monster cable yourself... Blue skies, Stu ------------------ Dual PIII 733 mhz, 128 RDRAM, Elsa GeFORCE 2 Ultra, 40 GHD, 12x CDRW, DVD, Philips AE, Klipsch 4.1
  13. Thanks for the reply Yeah when I fiddle with the gain knob it does move around a lot. It did work fine for a good while though. ------------------ Dual PIII 733 mhz, 128 RDRAM, Elsa GeFORCE 2 Ultra, 40 GHD, 12x CDRW, DVD, Philips AE, Klipsch 4.1
  14. My subwoofer has gone out of control... For starters, if I plug in the subwoofer and turn it on with no input or signal even plugged in. The subwoofer chugs away randomly firing, if the level is turned up 2/3 it will bottom out! If I send a signal, I can feel a weak output even with high volume levels and still the sub continuously firing randomly. It used to work great with no problems. I doubt there is any need for it but my setup: Yamaha RX-V1000 receiver. RF,S,C-3 and the ksw-10. What is wrong? Thanks in advance, Stu ------------------ Dual PIII 733 mhz, 128 RDRAM, Elsa GeFORCE 2 Ultra, 40 GHD, 12x CDRW, DVD, Philips AE, Klipsch 4.1
  15. I have the RX-V1000 with my RF,S,C-3, all I can say is that you will not be disapointed. I used to have a JVC but that was a piece of crap. Blue skies, Stu ------------------ Dual PIII 733 mhz, 128 RDRAM, Elsa GeFORCE 2 Ultra, 40 GHD, 12x CDRW, DVD, Philips AE, Klipsch 4.1
  16. Your fuse is blown, there is a little thing on the back that you can push in and turn to remove it. Phil-Klipsch moderator recommends: For the KSW-12, use a 1.5 amp slow blow fuse (Radio Shack part #2701022). 21. It is not your typical way of just plugging your headphones in and it automatically shuts off. Simply, hit the power/standby button, sound will still flow to the headphones and the volume knob will control the volume to the headphones. 22. Great we have a cut and paster. I will defend the AE here, I have not had a single driver problem. I explained earlier that the auto-update feature can be a pain. The review at Gamer's Depot and some other places http://www.gamersdepot.com/hardware/sound_cards/turtle_beach/santa_cruz/001.htm I decided for myself (you may choose otherwise) that I would not want the Santa Cruz. All I can say is look at full reviews of the different sound cards and decide what works best for you. 23. Well here is the speal on today's fine and exquisite soundcards...(my opinion, don't say I'm wrong) You are right on the SbLive cards, the emu10k chip has been out for 2 or so years now, SB is currently working on a newer card, no dates have been said. Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, this card had potential, but the company killed it. They have not released a decent set of new drivers in several months but there are _many_ problems remaining with it that need to be settled with new drivers. Philips AE, yes they are not really popular in the computer hardware industry but they have been making tvs, vcrs, recievers and all kinds of electronic gizmos for a while now. It is a relatively new card but what really sets it ahead of Santa Cruz especially are drivers being periodically released. Updating though is a pain with the auto-update. Anywho personal experience wise, sblive was good, back then though. I chose philips since I thought it had the most potential and I wanted to see how the Qsound worked and it sounds great. Klipsch 4.1s go well with it, trust me, I keep being told to turn my *word* down. =P Blue skies, Stu ---------------------- Dual PIII 733 mhz 128 RDRAM ATI Rage 128 pro AIW Philips AE Klipsch 4.1 12x CDRW 40 G HD DVD Win/Linux
