Mallette
Even with Mercury's purist approach, the resultant sound is, to my ears, the opposite of the Dave Mallette™ sound, which is utterly natural. You da man. [:$] To a great extent, this discussion is why I made those recordings. I couldn't help but wonder why there were so many crappy discs of all kinds out there. Problem is, I still; don't know. It is NOT rocket science. The rules are simple: 1. Put your mikes where your ears want to be. 2. Don't do anything else except what is electrically necessary to store the result. I SWEAR it is just that simple. Dave
TheEvan
Seems like everybody wants some wow factor. Also, sometimes artists get into the process. The results are not always good. After John Williams (the guitarist) got big, he insisted on a recorded sound that mirrored what he heard when playing. The result was two disks so close and so dry as to be almost unlistenable. "Aargh, I think my speaker just swallowed a guitar!"
