Paddler
looking for a "new" amp for a mostly vinyl setup w/ Forte speakers. TT is old Technics w/ new Denon DL 160 coming. Currently using old Denon @ 55 watts, need a little more power for me. not scared of vintage, trying to stay around $1000, maybe $1500 high end. Trying to narrow down the endless options
tube fanatic
Do you just want an amp, or a receiver, and do you want something with a built-in phono stage, or can you go with an external preamp? Also, keep in mind that if you are maxing out the power of the Denon, doubling the power will only get you another 3db in output from the speakers. So, you really need to get the power up to at least 150wpc to start realizing significant loudness increases.
Paddler
no preference on the built in vs external phono pre-amp other than affecting cost. i could live without a tuner for this application

I have had really good luck(success) with 80's/90's Denon and Onkyo Integra integrated amps with my Forte's, Quartet's, Heresy's. Good build quality with plenty of ooomph down low and detailed in the mid/highs. Here are a couple on Audiogon.com that I have been salivating over. 50 plus pound high-current Denon monster http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?intatran&1296266929&/Denon-pma-2000ivr-good-mm/mc-p 40 plus pound Onkyo Integra http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?intatran&1296757862&/Onkyo-a9911-int.-amp-90/140-wp Don't forget about NAD. This amp with the phono preamp module will easily keep you under $1500.00. http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?intatran&1293731690&/NAD-C375BEE-Integrated-Amp-wit Bill
russ69
Onkyo A-9555. Good bang for the buck and it can drive RF-7s if you ever need to.
Cody_Mack
Maybe you have already addressed this but the phono section of your amp may not be designed for the MC cartridge; even though the DL-160 is a high output moving coil cartridge it still may not be enough voltage to produce a standard line level signal coming out of the phono section. Some amps have a selector to use either MC and MM cartridges but many don't, and the norm is the MM input. Seems like you should have lots of volume with the Fortes and 50 watts. NOSValves
What about your current setup makes you want more power?
Paddler
current power is fine most of the time but occasionally want to fill a fairly large room. Thought the new cartridge might need some help as well. have also read where Forte's sounded better with more power.
