chambers1517
Finally got started on my theater room. I had several goals in mind and some created conflicts with each. One requirement was to be able to use my existing Klipsch Lascalas across the front. Here are the speakers set up in an 11'x14' bedroom. I made a temporary screen out of laminate. The screen is 100" wide and we have been using it while I work on the theater in the basement.
chambers1517
Here is a picture of the basement area where the front wall and IB will be installed. The board on the ground is the location of the wall. This use to be a bedroom and there is a 10'x6' closet that can be part of my IB space if I leave the door open. chambers1517
Here is a picture further back. The room will be about 25x13.6 when finished.

chambers1517
Here is a picture of the side wall and ceiling framing. I splayed the ceiling so it is about 10" higher at the rear than it is at the front.
chambers1517
OK , I should have taken more pictures but I had a hard time designing a way to fit 4 18's and my Lascalas in the front wall. My screen is 12' wide and 5' tall scope. I only have about 10" on each side of the screen. The Lascalas are 35" tall and the boxes are big enough to angle the speakers in some. I can also lean them back some if I need to and the screen will go from the top of them to 4" below the ceiling so I had to fit the subs between the fronts. I'm going to build risers so each row will sit higher. I will have 2 rows of seating and a bar at the back. Here is a picture of what I finally came up with. I basically built 2 2x8 walls and built boxes for the Lascalas.
chambers1517
Here is the space between the Lascala boxes. I basically built boxes for the subs. With the front baffle on, each pair of subs will be in a 40"x20" box with an open back.
chambers1517
Since this was going to be a Line Array of sorts I was concerned with flex. I tied the 2 walls together to eliminate all the flex I could. Both walls are glued and bolted to the floor. It really was pretty solid. chambers1517
I was pretty happy with the results but noticed the large cavity between each sub box and Lascala box.
chambers1517
I decided to go one more step and really eliminate any chance of flexing. I put the front on the sub opening and poured the the cavities with concrete. I also poured a 4" slab on top of everything. This took 3000#'s of concrete but this wall is now a solid mass. chambers1517
Here is where I am right now. Next step is to clean up and start wiring the room. I think I will sheetrock both sides of the first wall and insulate it. No need to sheetrock the second wall.
smokarz
looks great, good luck with the build, and keep us updated. this is about the size of my recently completed movie room. you'll be satisfied once everything is done. btw, do you plan to insulate the ceiling? chambers1517
I think I'm going to try to blow it in. Definately easier than the bat.
CECAA850
Are you using Ficaraudio drivers or others for your IB?
CECAA850
In pic 251.JPG, it looks like the IB openings have been covered over with plywood. Am I looking at the pic wrong or is there a temporary cover there?
chambers1517
I am going to use the FI IB 18" drivers. The front of the IB openings are covered over with plywood. The same sheet also covers the void where the concrete is. So basically the plywood sheet is 30" wide and the IB opening is 20" wide. 5" on each end of the plywood has concrete poured behind it. I am also going to put a piece of MDF over the plywood. I will then cut 2 holes in each baffle for the drivers. I hope this makes sense. The IB's are basically going to be mounted in a box with no back. The plywood is the front and will have 2 holes cut one over the other. CECAA850
Makes sense to me. I've been an IB'er for quite some time.

michael hurd
That has to be the sturdiest wall construction I have ever come across.... 2 x 8's for studs... and concrete! That combined with the short stud length will mean your front wall will be very stout.
jrod
Great work so far! I'm really interested to see how this turns out. Eventually, I too hope to have 3 LS across the front. Are you planning on a 5.2 or 7.2 set-up (sorry if I just missed that somewhere)? What are you going to use for surrounds? What about electronics? I really enjoy a nice "build thread", keep up the good work[Y]
