This is EXACTLY what dealers are for. If you have a halfway decent dealer with whom you've established a relationship, they certainly ought to be willing to let you borrow a tube amp over a weekend and listen to it. I'd suggest taking home two, a very inexpensive one and then one at about the top of your price range (assuming that's not redundent Smile.gif ) - that way, you'll get an idea of what you're giving up, if anything, by going with the less expensive amp.

Well, you can search this section going back to around 9/01 and you'll see a lot of discussion on that very point. But I'll see if I can summarize:

(1) Antique Sound Labs (ASL) Wave-8's ($100/each). Need a pre-amp ... Check Mobile's website for a nice, low-cost passive unit.

(2) Scott: NOS has a really nice sounding Scott tube unit. Fairly inexpensive. Craig and Mdeneen know a lot about these units.

(3) Eico HF-81: My personal favorite, an integrated amp. Caveat emptor, though ... there are a lot of severely impaired units floating around Ebay. Find a clean one with nice tubes for around $350, and prepare to be surprised.

(4) Dynaco ST-70 (think I have it right): Classic little amp. Soundbug1@aol.com (Mark Voigt, in Rhode Island) has about 400 of them in his basement. He bought the lot of them from Dynaco as mfg'ing defects, and basically fixes them and moves them along for a very reasonable price.

There are many more but these seem to be some of the fav's ...

Chris Robinson and lynnm pretty much covered the bases real well. So I will just agree !

You basically need to decide what price range your willing to go and Vintage or New and then dive in you won't regret it either way.
