joessportster
I want to build a cd shelf and I want to dado slots for the discs to rest in / on. Pine is splintering really bad ( the blades are brand new Italian made. I'm thinking pine is kinds soft for this. Anyone have suggestions how to have less splintering. joessportster
Crosscut. Using a 1X 4" pine ( or ?) putting a 3/16" wide dado all the way across ( still playing around with various design ideas). Joe
jhoak
How many toothed blade are you using? Pine needs a fairy fine blade to reduce splintering. Feed as slowly as possible without inducing burning of the wood. It's tough to sand out scorching. Unless of course that's the "look" you're going for. Or... Prefered method = Using a VERY sharp (I.E. new) utility knife score the cut lines on either side of the dado. Alternate method = Run a strip of wide masking tape down each cut line. Note: The prefered method always works well. The alternate method not as much.
Utard
Its kind of hard to say without seeing whats happening and what type of saw and how you are doing it? I do not know your skill level so here is a few ideas for any skill level. If in fact the blade is new and sharp. Try going a little slower on each pass. If its ripping out the corners then maybe try sanding and sharp edges before putting on the saw. Are you using table or radial arm? Radial arm, make sure the back stop is clean so the wood does not move at all and do not run back through on the back stroke. Table saw, are you using the blade guard? I am not going to say remove it but sometimes they get in the way. You got to do what you got to do. Are you using a table saw sled fence? That seems the best way to control the wood while cutting. Is the dado set up properly?
