ryansupak
Hi, here's question 2 of 2 about a pair of Heresy Industrial speakers I picked up. They could use a new coat of paint or at least some major touch-ups. I'm wondering exactly what kind of paint they used. I don't think it's anything like latex paint -- it has a "stipply" finish texture and even hidden parts of the box have a "satin" finish sheen. I was thinking that it might be some kind of off-the-shelf enamel, but I saw a comment in another thread that hinted it might be a kind of "fiberglass" finish. At any rate, if anyone knows what a readily-available equivalent is I'd appreciate it. Thanks, rs
Don Richard
There was something on that a while back around here. I think it is Polane but a forum search might tell for sure.
Guest " "
I was thinking that it might be some kind of off-the-shelf enamel, but I saw a comment in another thread that hinted it might be a kind of "fiberglass" finish. There are three type of finishes. No finish - plain birch, painted, and fiberglass coated. The fiberglass coated has swirls in it and if you look closely, you can see the fiberglass threads. The fiberglass always has metal trim around them. The painted could have metal trim, or in some models, black plastic corner guards.
ryansupak
That answers it. It must be paint then since there's no metal trim. Thanks once again for your help. rs
ryansupak
And yes, I'm thinking it might be some kind of 2-part stuff like Polane. I'm gonna go with Rustoleum Appliance Paint in the rattle can I think, though
Panacea Engineering
Duratex is the textured finish. Google it...It is not cheap and can be applied with a roller.
ryansupak
DuraTex...a-ha. Thanks. Not cheap but I'm still gonna go with it I think, considering I may as well do it right if I'm going to do it at all. rs
Groomlakearea51
It is a "duratex" type of paint, but is a compound/ formula made for Klipsch in bulk. The normal "sheen" for Klipsch paint is #40 or a semi-gloss made by OPEX/ Valspar, and to duplicate the sheen in other products you may have to add a drying agent, etc.
ryansupak
2 pints of Duratex on the way from speakerhardware.com. According to Duratex's technical document, you can add a small amount of water to the paint and that will reduce the texture slightly. I'm going to test that out first, to see if that achieves the desired effect. rs
CECAA850
Be sure you test it in some scrap cardboard or plywood first. I'd hate to have to get that stuff off once applied if I didn't like the finish. Be sure to bondo any major dings first also. I think there were a couple of spots that could use it. ryansupak
Yeah, planning on using one of my favorite substances in the world to fill the holes: Durham's Water Paste. (There's also a gap in the box near one of the pole mounts.) I've rebuilt half a barn roof with that stuff

ryansupak
New HIE crossover caps and mounting kit from Crites. Also picked up two new woofers from him. The midrange gaskets look good...I'm going to leave the midrange and tweeters alone for now. rs
ryansupak
Sanded and did some sealing/structural repairs. Encountered lots of bondo, house paint, and (definitely) glued-on back panels. This might be "heresy" (get it?! BWAHAHAHAHA!) but I think I might use a little wood stain and several layers of Zinsser Shellac and go for the "Truth In Materials" look. (The metal corners that I'm considering are, of course, not original but they'll do a lot to protect the corners, which are all quite worn.) Panacea Engineering
This type of protective corner will not block your port and they are inexpensive. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=260-
ryansupak
Thanks for that tip. I may grind down the corners on these since I like the look of the metal ones but I may go with those instead. rs
