McInstoh 2105 or 2125?

Hi there,,,I am trying to do some research on which older amplifier should I choose. I have heard the sound of a McIntosh (MC 2105) but never owned yet.

I am in New York and saw a MC 2105 in San Francisco for $720 in near mint condition. No walnut case and hasn't been serviced. I will have to get a shipping carton from McInsosh for $70 then get it shipped for about $90. Total of $880.

Then a friend told me he knows somebody who is selling (locally) a MC 2125 for $850 in mint condiiton. The unit comes with the walnut case in like new condition and was just recently serviced in February of 2011.

The 2105 looks a lot better but the 2125 is more powerful. Could you please help me choose which one would be best? Best sounding....

Thank you

On quality vintage equipment, I usually try to buy local, then pickup and drive the equipment myself to avoid shipping damage.

You can't go wrong with McIntosh. They are all good.

The other plus is that as long as you have the original Mac transformers and autoformers, everything else can be replaired. I have had some great deals buying damaged Macs and having them repaired. I bought a 2105 years ago for under $300 on ebay becasue it had cracked glass. No one was bidding. What fools. LOL. Mac sells brand new front glass for arround $100. I then spent another $150 replacing other worn out electronics, that I would have to have done on even a new looking pristine unit. So now I have a brand spanking new looking and sounding 2105 for just over $500. Every big city has at least one old school qualified Mac repairman. Find yours.

I have a beautiful 2105 that I purchased from a fellow forum member and it is outstanding. However, in this case, I would go with the 2125, not because of the power difference, but for the fact that it is a local deal (and a cabinet is included).

With the 2105 you could be getting a unit that was built back as far as 1967 and it may need a real servicing. With the 2125 you are getting a unit that has already been serviced.
