Quiet_Hollow
Anytime I watch a broadcast program that contains medium to large amounts of random noise (crash scenes, heavy machinery, audience cheer...etc.) I can pick out this certain type of sound. To describe its tone in words is difficult, but it sounds sort of like an fire alarm buzzer, a distinctly mid-range artifact that quickly jumps between three different timbers, but keeps the same same pitch. Maybe if I had the RTA hooked up, I could pick it out visually? I've been able to consistently lock onto this sound on not only my TV, but pretty much anyone else's since the switch to digital. It's not present when watching DVD or Blu-Ray. Anyone else experience this?

Quiet_Hollow
I did some more snooping around. Others have taken notice too...appears to be an audio "watermark" or a compression artifact. Here's a great example: Listen from 00:12 through to 00:19 Technical Article: http://spie.org/x31800.xml Prior discussion on another forum: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=93434
