They remind me of the cicada killer wasps we have here, but those are harmless in spite of their frightening appearance. I once had one in my garage which had to be 2.5 inches long. It hovered a few feet from me for 30 seconds and decided that I wasn't a suitable mate and left (surprised that my wife didn't agree with it and go along!!!!!).................
