chepo61
Looking at the specs. on the different receivers that I'm considering in my checklist on a future upgrade, I have this question to ask: Total Harmonic Distorsion. For example, I've seen figures like: 0.05 % at 8 ohms 20Hz-20KHz, 0.09 % at 8 ohms 20Hz-20KHz. Given the Klipsch's high sensitivity, would there be any audible difference (if any alot) between 0.05% and 0.09% ? ------------------ Yamaha RX-V2092 (receiver) RF3 II (fronts) RC 3 (center) RS 3 (surrounds) Yamaha YST-SW300 (subwoofer) Sony Mini Disc MDS - JE630 Pioneer DVD 344 Mitsubishi 32" T.V. NOZ
Chepo, Yes, when distortion starts it climbs fast, look for .05 or below THD. .09 could be rated at 120 watts rms when really it's .05 at 80 watts rms. tpg
I looked at a THD curve for an amp at one point... don't remember what amp it was but it went something like this: 20 Hz- 40% 40 Hz- 30% 60 Hz- 20% 120 Hz- 10% 160 Hz- 6% and on up... 1000 Hz- <1% and up to... 200000 Hz- 5% it was odd... Never its real value of .05. Power makes it vary as well... Rule of thumb, get the lowest THD you can. ------------------ SoundWise / ProMedia Tech Support / 1-888-554-5665s>
NOZ
Yea, The best is the + or - 3db. Do you know what three db is. It's twice the power. If you are driving 115 db at 100 watts, to get 118db you need 200 watts! Kind of like the richter scale no? ------------------ NOZ SYSTEM DUAL USAGE ROOM Fronts & Mains: Klipsch La Scalas Center: Klipsch RC-7 Rears: Klipsch RS-7's Projector: Infocus LP350 Screen: Draper Premier 96" x 72" TV: Toshiba 37" DVD: Toshiba SD-3805 Receiver: Harman Kardon AVR 7000 CD: Sony CDP CX250 EQ: Harmon Kardon EQ-8 Sub: Dual SVS Ultras w/ Samson 1000 watt amp http://www.geocities.com/seanshometheatre/ This message has been edited by NOZ on 08-30-2002 at 09:25 PM
prodj101
I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure 10 db is twice the volume. ------------------ New music system: 2.1 using SF-2's (soon to be RF-7's), and an RSW-15. for amplification Mcintosh MC02105, Sony SACD player. pioneer turntable. tpg
prodj- He means that it takes twice the power to get +3dB. From 1 watt to 2 watts for +3... and so on... that si what he was saying. ------------------ SoundWise / ProMedia Tech Support / 1-888-554-5665s> This message has been edited by trespasser_guy on 08-30-2002 at 10:06 PM
Malcolm
All else being equal, you won't hear a difference between .05% and .09% THD. Low THD is not all it is cracked up to be. There are a lot of other forms of distortion in your system that the manufacturers give you no info on that are more objectionable. Many highly thought of tube amps are capable of generating THD as high as a few percent.
