What's the most important aspect to getting great sounding digital audio?

The original recording and mastering job.

Quantizaiton Error

Compressing the track

Loudness Wars

Who mastered the recording for the medium, and the artist who has final say.

A lot of the modern pop is full of psycho-acoustics to try to hide the effects of the low bit rates.

Is HI-Rez worth the effort?

Depends on all of the above, considering just Quantization Error, more bits is always better.

Is 320kbps good enough?

NO

What to look for when buying a DAC?

The last time I read a shoot out, the DAC makers in the $500 and up range had achieved parity.

I like my Emotiva DAC pre amp with all of the interfaces etc, MAC looks good too in this same respect.

Different options for using DSP?

The DSP should auto synch with the signal it is receiving, what options?

My recent change from USB to HDMI feeding my DAC has transformed my listening experience. My knowledge in this area is very limited but help from others here (you know who you are) has helped immensely and hopefully others who are interested and/or getting into digital audio for the first time can benefit from this discussion.

USB is a real data comm protocol with CRC ARQ error correction, so with a good cable and no grounding problems it is the best.

Isn't HDMI hi res VGA and USB in the same cable?

Dont forget that if you are using your computer to stream audio that you bypass your windows EQ via AISO or WASAPI, even if you are using an external DAC. I am a big fan of Fidelify and can almost always tell the difference between "Direct Sound" and a bypass option. The program is in perpetual beta though so it can be a little finicky at times.
