drwhom
Good day all! I bought the new quintet for a new 7.2 Devon receiver. I used the speakers for the surround channels. I bought R15M for the front left/right. I have R125W sub. I have read that the center is the most important speaker. My question: what is a good center upgrade for my current setup? And, are there other factors I might be failing to ask? Thank you!
Woofers and Tweeters
Welcome to the forum. What's wrong with the center that you have?
drwhom
Probably nothing! LOL. Perhaps I might just be looking for a reason to upgrade.
Woofers and Tweeters
Do it. We don't know what we're missing until we do.
drwhom
That's what I'm looking for! HAR! Now, which one? I don't want to go crazy dollar-wise.
The History Kid
The timbre match for the main LCR would be the R-25C - but it's not going to do the best for you in terms of SQ. The best would be either the RP-440C or RP-450C. The problem then becomes the timbre and the fact that the satellites and bookshelves may have problems keeping up. So, you're walking a slippery slope. Do you plan to upgrade the rest any time soon?
drwhom
No. I just got this new setup. I upgraded from a 20 year old sony boxed set. I know, I know - newb. lol
The History Kid
Do you watch a lot of movies? If so, I might opt to look for a used RC-62 ii instead. You may have to dial it down a bit, but the 62 will perform wonderfully.
drwhom
When I DM'd Klipsch, they recommended R25C or the RP25C and I'm glad I asked the group.
The History Kid
The R-25C would in fact timbre match - but it's not going to be exactly a strong speaker. It was designed with the R-15M's in mind, that's about the only benefit it has going for it in your setup. The RP-250C is not a bad option, but I'm sure you could find an RC-62 for the price of the 250C, and the build quality and SQ is so much better on the 62. It sounds like you're going for lower profile, so the 4-driver centers probably are not what you are seeking. I think if you can find a 62, you will be very happy.
drwhom
I found the 62 for $275 used in "very good" shape. Will it be too much for my other speakrs or juuuust right
The History Kid
I think that's about right. You may need to dial down the RC-62 just a little bit, but I think you'll be better equipped to avoid the upgrade bug on the center a while longer with it.
drwhom
Thank you all very much for the quick and thoughtful responses.
The History Kid
No problem. Your next upgrade consideration would be your main speakers. So look out! lol
drwhom
I was at Frys initially and ALMOST bought some monster mains. However, the room setup isn't that large. Perhaps a basement home theater? mwahaha!
The History Kid
I probably have the smallest room of anyone here, and I've got a 9.1 configuration in it. It's fun. lol
drwhom
Have you ever posted your room diagram? I'm interested.
The History Kid
I honestly have never created one. I'm a schematic guy. I use schematics lol. It's a 9'x9' room with a nook. The ceiling is curved - not on purpose - because the old owners took out a closet on one side of the room. Yeah, this room is terrible. lol
drwhom
Speakers mounted on the wall pointing down?
The History Kid
Nope, flat mounts still using the keyholes, or shelves.
