Don't get the wrong idea painting them is easy.... I do understand you might not want honey oak....you could go a different color stain....more work.... but worth every second when finished.

But if you really need to paint Valspar makes a black lacquer that will be best....

I think you should STAIN them black rather than paint them black. Painting will fill in the grain and you'll lose the high quality attractiveness of real wood.

 

Stain, then add the gloss level finish of your choice- probably better to rub in an oil finish or wax. Of course, it would be wise to sand the existing finish off first. Or, at least sand enough to allow the stain to penetrate.
