SJC170
I want to purchase a pair of the outdoor speakers and cant find anywhere how they are powered. Do they take batteries? Do I have to hardwire them? Do they plug into an outside outlet. Im sure this is a silly question but I honestly can't find anywhere on the site how they are powered. The History Kid
You will need to run them with an amp, usually either a dedicated 2 channel stereo receiver, or zone 2 from a pre-existing AVR. What's your budget, and which outdoor speakers are you looking to purchase? ETA: Assuming you need an amp, and a means to plug in your sources...and that you will not be using an outdoor sub, this would power a deck setup or a pool setup pretty easily. http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/yamrs201bl/yamaha-r-s201-2-ch-x-100-watts-natural-sound-stereo-receiver/1.html
SJC170
Thanks for responding. I thought I could install the speakers and stream music into them from my phone without wires. But after thinking about it, the speakers would have to have a power supply Im assuming. I would want to spend no more than $500 on a set of speakers. I was thinking I could install the "Klipsch - 5-1/4" 2-Way All-Weather Outdoor Speakers (Pair) - Black" and mount them on to my pergola. Or I was thinking about buying a couple rock speakers.... The History Kid
Allow me to make an alternative suggestion. http://www.klipsch.com/products/outdoor-speakers#aw-500 The AW-500's are pretty respectable as well. You won't be missing on too much there. Add them with that R-S201 amp that I sent you a link, and you should come in right around $480 with shipping. Go get yourself some outdoor grade speaker wire, and you've got your setup for right around $530. You could also look for a used amp/AVR - but I'm not sure it'd save you that much over the R-S201. The History Kid
Alternatively, you could do something like The Three http://www.klipsch.com/products/the-three The One http://www.klipsch.com/products/the-one Or the Groove http://www.klipsch.com/products/groove-portable-bluetooth-speaker These are all wireless units, and are fairly simple to bring in when you aren't using them. SJC170
So, the rock speaker is powered by a battery? Or does it get charged some how?

No, it is powered off the amplifier. All of those speakers are going to require an amplifier for power.
SJC170
Okay, gotcha. Thank you for all of your help.
The History Kid
No problem. Just remember - if you do permanent installations - like the rock speakers or the ones with the big drivers, you will need that amplifier to power them. Otherwise, if you go the route of the bluetooth ones - they're rechargable. I haven't heard the One or the Three, but I imagine your best sound quality will still come from the AW line and a good receiver.
USNRET
My patio setup. I live in a VERY corrosive environment and these have last 2 years now I think, still good to go. Feed the Emo however you want.
Paducah Home Theater
The normal consumer versions like the AW-650's just have typical terminals on the back, you can even use banana plugs. Gotta have an amp or just use an extra zone on your receiver, there's no difference between them and any other speaker. On the commercial side usually it's a 70V system due to long runs and those come with built in transformers but even the ones that do typically have bypass settings so you can use them like normal speakers. WMcD
I'd just counsel that you have to be realistic about how much level you will achieve with any of the above speakers outdoors. Speakers, small and inefficient, which have respectable level in a bedroom or living room can be disappointing outdoors. I'd say, they achieve "background music" levels.
