Q-Man
John, I spoke to Bill about djk's comment. I quess djk doesn't have his information right. Bill was rather up set, and asked me who is saying such things. The 290 driver and the other drivers that he is building are the same as Altec built. After all, he has all the old Altec tooling. But, thanks for the heads up anyway. Q.
djk
My remarks were based on the discussion at the Altec User's Board: "Entire Site, Concept, Layout, and Information Copyright © 2003 by Todd W. White" The discussion was linked to from the High Efficency Speaker Asylum: http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.pl?forum=hug&n=44712&highlight=altec+is+back&r=&session= This turned up the data sheets at "altecpro" http://www.altecpro.com/pdfs/399_SS.pdf Todd W. White's remarks: "Because Bill @ GPA did not have the tooling for the pot casting, he could not make the real 299 for ALPro. So, he's making a "pancake" version." Todd W. It is nice to know GPA is still making quality replacement parts. I DO NOT have any 16 ohm 290s for sale, the majority out there are 4 ohms. The 292 was an 8 ohm 290 without the transformer cover. The 8 ohm drivers may be connected to the 3-0 taps on a AA network, the 4 ohm drivers to the 2-0 taps. This will give the same frequency response and drive level as the 16 ohm on 4-0 The 511E (not will mount the 290 without a throat adaptor. Being the same physical size as the Klipsch K5J it will fit the top section of those Klipschorns. Those with a K400/401 will need to make a new grill-frame. This is a nice workaround with the AA and opens up more driver configurations for you to buy should you decide not to go with GPA. We change nothing on the network but the tap, the reflected impedance back to the mid caps is the same so nothing else changes. It's really brilliant, I wish I thought of it. Mycroft
I just hooked up a pair of Altech 511Bs to my La Scalas and I have to say I am thrilled. They are so much more open and effortless than the K400s. My only question is how are you guys attaching the K-55-V drivers to the horns? Given that I'm now in the, uh, experimental phase, I used (and it worked!) zip ties. I can get some bar stock and threaded pipe and weld up some, but if there is something that exists already I'd consider that option. I have the 808-A drivers that came with them. Has any one tried those? I should mention the 'Scalas are stock except for ALK crossovers. http://www.anticlockwise.com/gallery/album102 (yes, they are really dirty. I bought them for an art project out in the desert and haven't yet taken an air compressor to clean them...)
sfogg
"but if there is something that exists already I'd consider that option. " Parts Express sells an adapter for around $5 that works well. The 511b is a much nicer horn then the K400. Shawn
