Randy Bey
Upon the advice of Kirk from Cary I replaced the 12ax7s in the phono stage with a pair of Raytheon black plate NOS 1950's 12ax7s. Well, I didn't buy them but I borrowed them. Still sounds all rolled off. What the heck else could it be? The output is equally bad in both channels, so it almost has to be something common to both, such as power supply voltages, etc. One thing Kirk mentioned was that the later SLP90s were set up for 12au7s instead of 12ax7s, and it would sould terrible due to the bias with 12au7s. In other words, not interchangable. Could it be that this guy was updated to 12au7 but the owner put 12ax7s in there instead?

mobile homeless
I miss Zappa on the porcelain... Sounds to me as if you have a problem with the stage. At the very least, try some 12AU7 and see what happens. Does it look like anyone has been into the phono stage? It actually is a pretty small area. Also, did you ask Kirk for the schematic?
