fivelitermustang
I am looking for a pretty nice subwoofer which posseses some nice quality but can still put out some decent SPL levels down low. Currently I have listened to: PS-1200 = $790CDN <-seemed to have the 'boom' Velodyne CHT-10 = $680 <-seemed to be more accurate but not as deep or loud Are there any options that are available that are in the similar price range? Invidiosulus
I personally haven't a clue when it comes to subwoofers but I believe a number of people on here recomend the Paradigm PW-2200. Although I have no idea what one of those costs. Just what I've heard is that it is a great deal for canadians. Peace, Josh
Dustin B
Stay far away from the PS series from Paradigm. Bandpass yuckyness. Also that is too much for that sub. For that price you should be able to get the Paradigm PW2200 which actually is a good sub. With some hunting you may also find a Mirage BPS400 in the $800CDN price range. The CHT10 is a little gutless for my taste, especially at that price as well. Paradigm PDR10 should come close to keeping up and I bought one a few years ago for $350CDN. Anyways, what I feel is by far the best you can do for $700 CDN is to buy this: http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=Tempest and this: http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=AVA250 Then build this: Doesn't have to look like that though. Here's my site where I detail its construction: http://dustin.bunnyhug.net/sonostart.php. And this site shows many more examples using a number of different drivers (but for your budget the Tempest is easily the best choice): http://members.tripod.com/~terryctheater/shivaphotoalbum/page12.html This thing will play much lower than any commercial sub at 2-3x its price point (being tuned to 16hz with a 6" port will do that; SVS being the exception) dust a PW2200 in extension, output and sound quality and make someone who payed $790 for a PS1200 cry. TheEAR
Bandpass yuckyness you bet,the Paradigm PS series are IRRITATING,DISTORTING and BOOMY ONE NOTEY boom box deluxe "subs".When I was just a neo newbie with very little cash I purchased the PS800 and PS1000 for movies(the PS series was just released if I remember). I got sick of the boom, even when balanced(SPL and freq.cutoff and placement)the bass was heavy and irritating at times. The PS has power,oh yes for the compact design and low price it boomy riffic.Quality sub bass it is NOT. Then I discovered the Paradigm Servo-15 the Velo servo control subs and never went back.Sold the PS POS fast The best bargain in Canadian subwoofing is the Paradigm PW2200,its a near legend of value. If you look around you should fing this sub for around $700 Canadian. It has good power, good sub bass quality and will reach LOW. As for DIY,Dusty is up to no good with his tubes and giant toilet paper rolls.DIY will get you the maximum performance for you dollar no doubt, you have to put your time into it.
