Yeah, it looks like they are using the 13W7 drivers in these subs... I have heard one of my friends 13W7 in a 3CF net box tuned to 35Hz. The sub was getting about 1200W RMS from a Memphis Belle. The setup is in a 92' Ford Taurus which you can probably hear from about 5 blocks away. It dropped the low notes like it was nobodys business... not to mention that it has 4" P-P so it looks amazing when it's moving. The thing was absolutely insane how loud and good it sounded. It was tight and controlled at the same time.

I'm thinking of building a pair of these transmission line monitors (they will cost about $500CAD)... Does anybody have any experience with these speakers and are they worth it?

Take a hammer and smash it and then get a real subwoofer.

Well from what I gather... they are saying that you just put the driver on it's side and plug it in and you will be cranking out 120+db @ 20hz no problem. LOL!

Does anybody have any ideas on a ported Tempest that puts out good response to 25Hz? Currently, I have it in a 3CF sealed box with an Adire AVA250. I'd like a little more low end output... the current setup drops off pretty fast @ ~40-50Hz. I'd like to keep the box compact, no sonotubes though. I don't really want a 10CF box in my room. Any ideas would be great. How would a 5CF box tuned to about 22Hz sound? How much port area do I need? I also have a Shiva that I used to use in my SUV. I know the Shiva would be more optimal in the same sized small box than a Tempest but the Tempest is more efficient and drops lower.

With my experience I don't think you need a lot of power to extend low? With cabin gain you get a huge boost in the lowest octave. I got a 15" Kove Armageddon M-Series DVC-4ohm coils running on about 1/4 gain off a Crossfire BMF1000d so essentially it's getting around ~150-200W. Box is 3.25CF net tuned to 35Hz and the whole system seems to peak at around 50Hz. I've set off my neighbours car alarm from two houses down when playing a sine sweep. I also ran a Shiva in a 3CF box tuned to ~28Hz, I only had about 150W on there and the low end extension on that sub was incredible. When you have the response of the box coupled with cabin gain you have a really nice extension down to 20Hz.

Krell for $20k? I'd rather buy ten SVS subs for that price.

Here is my baby: It punches really tight and there is no boominess or distortion. 3CF sealed... lacks nuts under 30Hz cause it's 3CF sealed with only 250W RMS but I'm going to built a 9CF box with a 60 square inches of slot port. This thing sucks for the 2999.99CAD he payed for it at Best Buy. The mids are very harsh and at high volumes they really break up and are piercing. The subwoofer doesn't have any power under 40Hz. The speakers have some sort of ADAPTiQ technology that compensates the sound to the room environment but in my opinion it sounded very poor. I could put together a killer Paradigm system with a sick receiver for the price he paid for his Bose.

Dunno... I have a 15" Tempest in a 3CF sealed box with a 250W Adire plate amp on it and the thing is tight and kicks like a mofo. The only complaint is the lack of 35Hz-> response but I don't care so much for that because I'm not a HT maniac but I'll try a 9CF box later in winter. By the way how big is your enclosure? Also downfiring shouldn't make any difference at all.

One word: (well actually three) DIY

I finished the box by filling in the countersinked screws with wood filler. Then I took some sandpaper and rounded off the edges and all that. Then I took an oscillating finishing sander with 80 grit sandpaper and ran it over the surface to make it extremely smooth. I then took and sprayed the box with generic grey primer. Then I sanded it again so that it was smooth again. I then bought some MotoMaster Aerosol Can Truck Bedliner... I don't know what you got in the US I think Duplicolor makes some of that. That stuff is like $9CAD/$7US. You hold the bedliner 2ft away and lightly mist the box till it turns black. The plastic is black with a hard durable non-stretching plastic texture that is literally like a skin around the box that is impermeable to airleaks and such.

I'm running Tempest in 3CF box sealed with an AVA250 but I'm going to put it in a 8CF box tuned to 18Hz soon. I think part of the problem why it isn't getting as much oomph as it should is that it is running off a SoundBlaster Live! Platinum 5.1 soundcard. It only cost me $600CAD to build and I can easily build a different box with the same truck bedliner finish for about $50CAD. I still need to find a way to sound deaden my room. The various frequencies set my drywall to vibrate rapidly adding nasty rattling which distracts from the music. When I am playing my sub I got pillows and other stuff just layed beside the wall pushing it down to stop the vibrations. All my pictures have little sponges attached to the corners. LOL!

The back gets pretty warm but never hot to the touch... don't worry it can take it I've had them for three years and they run perfectly. It's supposed to be warm even when you are idling and not sending a signal there. I don't know what they are like when they are on and the PC is turned off because I always unplug em'. I turn off the speaker by unplugging them and they make that noise. Makes no difference... still have been reliable.

Damn right... oldschool ProMedia v2.400s... 3 years and running strong as day one while people with 4.1s and 5.1s have had their speakers crapper out on them within one week because of some overlooked resistor.

Winamp is better... you should grab version 2.9x but nothing 3.xx Then you should grab this plugin: http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/mpeg/mad-plugin/ That 3rd party decoder is sick.

I suggest you just keep it flat and keep the subwoofer on the standard 11 o' clock position.

I'll sum this up real fast: It's called a clipped signal... you can blow your amp and your speakers. Software equalizer settings sounds like garbage... the only way to equalize is to buy a nice hardware equalizer. Musicmatch Jukebox is not very good... you need to run Winamp with the MAD HQ decoder plug-in. The sub is exaggerated... it's not what it's hyped up to be and it would never come close to the quality1 and power of an HT sub.

That's what you get for slamming Creative Labs...
