Parrot
Stefan, Check out some of the BestBuy stores in your area, and similar electronic places. You may be able to find a Sony SACD/CD/DVD player on close-out (new models won't be out for a few months). You may be able to get something for around $119-149. Check their multi-channel area, which will probably be buried somewhere toward the back of the store. If it's missing the box and/or manual, talk them down. They can come down considerably on no-box close-outs. CD playback will be fine and you'll also have the option that way of discovering SACD. It's a better bet than buying something several years old on eBay for your price range.
Deang
That's a good suggestion -- I hadn't thought of closeout models.
prodj101
get something that's a single disc. you get a better performance/price ratio with those, unless you're hell bent on getting multidisc or something.
Parrot
The close-out selection at BestBuy is slim pickins nowadays, but Stefan is in L.A. so he's probably got about 25 stores to choose from.
AndyKubicki
Paul makes a good point. You also have the 30 day money back option if you don't like it.
whell
Picked up a Marantz DV 4000 a few months ago at my local hifi shop for $150. It was a display model and missing the remote, but sold as new with a full waranty. Picked up a remote on Ebay a month or so later for $20. Sound's great, and now I have a back up DVD player in case the NAD ever goes belly-up. The deals are out there if you have the patience. Dale W
Remarkable frequency response linearity and minuscule distortion of even inexpensive portable CD players has relagated meaningful ( that is , audible) aberrations to the bad old days of cassette decks and phono cartridges. You can now assume impeccable , ruler flat frequency response coupled with distortion on the order of hundredths or thousands of a percent from almost any new machine. " DON'T " fall into the trap of quasi-20-bit or quasi-24-bit playback, CD is a 16 bit format. As you examine the S/N figures, keep in mind that each "bit" of processing dept adds 6db of dynamic range, so the 16 - bit cd format has a maximuim dynamic range of 96db. True 24 bit digital record / playback systems will yeild a maximium of 144db (24x6). which is rarely approached in practice-and ( forunatly) is never encountered in normal music programs. My personal advise is look for the best DAC in the player you can afford. This is the " KEY " to a good player. The rest is window dressing and toys. AndyKubicki
Whell, are you sure you didn't mean that the NAD is the back up for the Marantz?
