DVD Audio

Well, I tried to get this to play the DD version of the Fleetwood Mac DVD-a with no luck. It seems if the player realizes that it is a DVD-a, it will only play the high res formats. Doesn't even give me an option for DD. My old DVD player in the bedroom will play the DD version. I connected a set of RCA's to the 2 channel analog audio out and I think CD's sound better this way than through the digital out. The digital out must be turned off in the set-up to listen this way.

I have mine set-up this way:

Audio 1:

Audio DRC-off

Dolby digital out-Dolby digital

DTS out-DTS

Linear PCM-down sample off

Mpeg out-Mpeg-PCM

Digital out-on ~Off if playing CD's~ (My preference)

SACD playback-Multi channel area

Audio 2:

Virtual surround-off

Lagato pro-standard

Audio out 5.1 Channel

Speaker settings-fix

Hi bit-on

CD digital direct-off

The high resolution formats blow away the DD version anyway!

Take care trader

Mike

I listened to "The Captain and Me" by the Doobies 2 times today in the surround mode with the Panasonic RP91.

It makes the RB5s sound like they were meant to sound in my brain dead opinion. Vinyl without the hassle perhaps. Although it has been about 8 years since I listened to vinyl in large doses.

I use the MSB Link II with pretty nice AQ interconnects for CDs, which is pretty good BUT...it sounds a bit tinny or shrill on the top end compared to DVD-A.

I have been thinking about adding the upsampling the the LINK to see if there is an improvement for CDs.

No SACD experience yet.

Mike:

Thanks for confirming that there is no choice when you get a hybrid disc. I just got a new disc, David Koz, and there is a setup menu for DTS, DD, 2 channel DVD-A and 5.1/DVD-A. But on some hybrid discs there are no setup for your audio preferences. I have my 47a setup pretty similar to u. I have CD digital out enabled. But I have analog cables from the player and into my preamp where it's marked CD. When I listen to music I use the player's DACS. I guess the function for CD digital out/off is only if u are using a digital connection and don't have rca cables hooked up. The only fault I have with this player is that it doesn't automatically downmix a disc when you are listening with 2 channel analog. Mike, my friend came over and we used his tube amps with the hih-rez formats. I was thinking that I would be blwon away because all I read about is how magical the tube sound is. Well my SS amp sounded as good as his tubes. We both agreed that we thought they both sounded excellent. We took the same source and then ran it into his tubes and my SS. We used a SS preamp and also tried a tube reamp with tubes vs. a SS preamp with SS amp. The amp that sounded best that he brought was the Scott 299b. A beautiful performing piece. I can't believe you can get such great sound from a 40 year old intergrated amp. This is good since now I can give up my bi-amp crusade and not feel like I need an upgrade to tubes.

My experience with DVD-Audio is through my Technics (Panasonic) DVD-Audio player, Model A-10.

I purchased this player as part of a package deal, through a special offer at Vanns.com.

The package was for a Technics receiver, along with the A-10 DVD-Audio player, for a close-out price.

I learned from this site that the Technics A-10 was a high-end, highly regarded unit that listed for a high price(over $1300) in 2000, and at the special package price, I could not pass on the opportunity.

I am very happy I bought this player. It replaced a Marantz CD player, and RCA DVD player.

I say without hesitation, this DVD-Audio player sounds outstanding even in CD format. The DVD video side is

also impressive.

I have also contemplated buying a SACD machine, specifically the Sony 9000ES unit. I have decided to hold off for the time being, while I sort out the DVD-Audio side and upgrade my Video side (I am looking at HDTV video, and have a lot to learn!).

DVD-Audio is impressive, especially at the right price!
