RF5 or RF7

DeanG, for a brief moment I thought you were a genius (hey, maybe you are!).

But then I looked at the dimensions of the RB75. The 10" width (to be the

height when turned sideways) is the killer. The killer dimension on the RC7

is the 9" height, not the width or the depth.

Hey, but thanks for making me feel really good for about a minute!

OK ya'll, it boils down to this . . .

I must use the RC35, at least until something better (than RC35) and smaller

(than RC7) comes along.

I will likely keep the RS35's as surrounds, at least for now, and maybe move

them to rears down the road. Currently I'm not using rears at all, although

my receiver is capable of 7.1.

Here's the clincher -

My Dealer will swap out my RF5's for RF7's for $466 plus tax. He has one pair

of black RS7's in stock. Black was the color I chose for the 5's.

If I swap out, my system would consist of RS7/RC35/RS35 for the forseeable

future. If not, it will be RF5/RC35/RS35. Both combinations are paired

with twin SVS 2039PC+.

Somebody please flip a coin and tell me what to do. My heart says 7's.

Dave

yes, listen to bruinsrme, the center and sats you bought are not even big enough for the 5's, if you are really concerned about balance, than you need to take all the speaks back, that is if you go with the 7's. as far as the 5's being step children, no, not at all. that is just 7 owner pride speaking, to me the 7's are step children? it just depends on what you are using. my son has a pair of 5's as front channels, and they do sound wonderfull. but!!!! i have him supplied with the rf 3's as sats, and the rc 7 as center. after having the rc and rs 3's i sold all, and bought up, the threes are better suited for book shelf speaks as front channels, they are a very weak speak by comparison, of course this is my opinion, but it comes from having them in house, and wasting money, i will admit all the experimentation is fun12.gif

The weak link in your speakers is the RC-35. I understand size constraints, however if you can, please find a way to get the RC-7. Also for roughly $500 you could get the RF-7's and use a phanthom center. I think the RF-7's and the RF-5's are as different as night and day. Basically the RF-5 is a RF-3 on steroids.

Having said all of that the most important question is do you like your system and how it sounds? If you do then forget about what you read and what anyone says. Afterall you just have to please yourself and those around you.

Thanks a bunch to everyone who replied.

After several sleepless nights, I have decided to keep the RF5's, as well

as the RC35 and RS35's. After listening to several CD's, some of which

just didn't sound "good" with my previous JBL's, they all sound great now.

The height of the RC7 was the issue all along. Are you listening Klipsch?

In my case, 8.5" would have worked but 9" would not. Maybe in the future,

Klipsch will provide me with another center channel option that will also

be compatible with the 5's. Then I could consider replacing the center

and surrounds, and moving the RS35's to the rear (if I can figure a way to

get wires back there).

It sure was a whole lot simpler in the days of 2-channel . . .

  • 4 weeks later...

I have heard the RF5's with the RC35 - watching and listening to The Band's Last Waltz movie - the sound between the 3 speakers was excellent. The RC35 sound was balanced with the RF5's. I am going back and running the AVIA disk on this setup to verify timbre match, but overall I think you made a great choice!

Bigger is sometimes the worst thing you can do with speakers if you like quality sound. Your speakers need to breathe. I had huge jbl towers in my room with two tens in each the northridge series and they sounded very bad compared to bookshelfs. They would play louder but the midrage was so muddled. Then i came across klipsch sf-2 badda bing badda boom i had the right size for my room. I would love to ugrade to the reference but their to big for my room except the rf-15 towers which i am in know way giving up the sf-2 for them. I like the bass i get from the sf-2 too. My floor isn't that even or i would go with the rf-25. But i still may they do have adjustable spikes i think. I wish i had your problems. I bet the rf-5 are awesome
