WhalerCane
I recently have purchased a pair of RP-5's. I am planning to add a RC-3 and some rears. Now I am reciever shoping. I will use it mostly for HTR, but I want something that will still sound good with music, especially the blues. Now I am wrestling over whether I need a THX certified reciever or not. If not, I think I would go with either the Yamaha RX-V800 or the Denon 3801, with the Yamaha a slight edge due to cost and personal experience. I may also be able to get my hands on a used RX-V1, but that would be a stretch and even it is not THX certified. If THX is a must, that sort of leaves me with either the Onkyo DS787, 777, or the pioneer 33TX Elite. The Onkyo is a little pricey, but I'm not in love with Pioneer. I've read a lot on Audio review and it is apparent most everyone likes their reciever. I respect the opinions of those on this board, and I would appreciate any comments on THX or the recievers I have mentioned, particularly if anyone has any experience with the RP-5's. Thanks for your thoughts. This message has been edited by WhalerCane on 07-05-2001 at 12:57 AM
boa12
imo opinion the thx cert is just hype u pay for in the price of the receiver. most all the non-cert ones go by their specs anyway, which sucks really. because of thx we have that too high fixed 80hz on our bass mgmts. if u get a thx trade in for tiny lil sat speakers caus that's what their specs are designed for. sorry i promised not to rave about that anymore ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnect & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D 5-disk cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver (vintage 1975) Russound AB-2 receiver switch to RF-3 Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics SL-1950 turntable/AT LS500 cartridge Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! kmijeski
Regarding THX certidied, I recently spoke with a respected audio dealer - Watkins Stereo ( some older guys may remember these speakers - they sold patents to infinity and were a stong competitor to Klipsch. Anyway, His opinion is that it is a money making ploy for the THX people. It has no extra benefits, It os like an endorsement - which THX charges the reciever producer to put the THX symbol on the equipment, which is passed on to you. Steve Phillips
I'm one that's not into THX.Why pay the price if the speakers aren't THX? I agree with others that it's hipe. That's just my oppinion. The Subwoofer Guide from Widescreen review states the 80Hz blends best with mains that go down to 35Hz.I agree, but if you guys don't come by,you won't know for sure,he,he ------------------ Main HT:'77 Klipschorns w/ALKs,'75 Heresy center, modified with,K-Horn sqauwker & AA network. boa12
sorry steve i gotta throw a wrench in that widescreen blanket statement by thinking that it would depend a lot on which sub you're blending w/ the mains, room placement/characteristics, etc. ok, then again i'll believe them because i want it to be true . ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnect & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D 5-disk cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver (vintage 1975) Russound AB-2 receiver switch to RF-3 Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics SL-1950 turntable/AT LS500 cartridge Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! WhalerCane
Thanks for your responses. I know it is always personal preference, but it is fairly obvious that THX is not must have.
Quenten
It is nice to know that Klipsch is THX certified!

USparc
Hi all, THX, it is al about the movie experience. To ensure that you will experience this the equipment(speakers ,amplifiers,...) must meet certain acoustic criteria. THX certified equipment should meet those criteria. For amplifiers it means that they can assure a wider dynamic range and more faithfully reproduced sound, plus adequate power for the room size. That is why that THX certified amps or receivers have at least 100W real power/ch. BUT I am wondering why THX label on different equipment. It doesn't make much sense to put THX labels on different equipment. It is the complete system that has to reproduce the movie experience not just one component. Ok with THX certified components it is propably most likely it will be, but there are a lot of speakers that don't match with certain receivers. Not to mention the speaker placement. It all depends ... Just listen to a complete system and put the THX label yourself. By the way onkyo has also non THX receivers: DS676, 696(new) They will handle the dynamics on those klipsch Reference without any problem. In any way test the receiver first with the RP-5's. Don't mind THX. ------------------ ------------------------- Receiver: Onkyo 676 DVD: Pioneer DV-525 Screen: Thomson 46" RetroProjection Front: RF-3's Rear: RF-3's Center: RC-
