thebes
If you could drop down to DVD/Music under Entertainment and look under "Blue Note" could use your help with a couple of jazz questions I have. Thanks
coda
Thebes, a few jazzheads may be tuned to the DNC tonite, if these audio samples ring true, the category falls somewhere between Dixieland and swing, some may also refer to it as Chicago jazz. See Eddie Condon's Mob Sessions for more. Hope this helps.
mike stehr
It`s cold outside And the paint`s peeling off of my walls There`s a man outside In a long coat, grey hat, smoking a cigarette Now the light fades out And I`m wondering what I`m doing in a room like this There`s a knock on the door And just for a second I thought I remembered you So now I`m alone Now I can think for myself About little deals And *issues* And things that I just don`t understand Like a white lie that night Or a slight touch at times I don`t think it meant anything to you So I open the door It`s the `friend` that I`d left in the hallway "Please sit down" A candle lit a shadow on a wall near the bed You know I hate to ask But, are `friends` electric? Mine`s broke down And now I`ve no one to love So I find out your reason For the phone calls and smiles And it hurts And I`m lonely And I should never have tried And I missed you tonight So it`s time to leave You see this means everything to me
thebes
Electric, thanks for the info and links. Mike, I like it whose it by. Really makes a mood. Electric, checked around and nobody seems to have the the 1999 re-issue of Pete Kelly's Blues. If you have it could you tell me what label put it out maybe they still have copies. Thanks ---------------- thebes, Unfortunately, I can't add much to the dixieland side of Jazz since that seems to be your stated interest ala Pete Kelly. I listened to a lot of it growing up, but bebop, hard bop, and progressive styles hit my ears as a teenager and have not let me go. The one artist who's crossover from dixieland to other styles that I really like is Pee Wee Russell on his wonderful B-flat clarinet. This is all said with full respect and love for Louis Armstrong and his work. He's still untouchable. Klipsch out.
thebes
Thanks Jazz, It's one of those conundrums where I don't know enough and I'm trying to describe it at best I can. I have always gotten a kick out of Dixieland, but I know what that sounds like. In other words, I've heard it, I like it but I don't know what it is. Basically thanks to you, Electric and others it appears what I may be searching for is a transition from Dixieland to another jazz/blueish form. I'm hoping to grab up a coulple of the suggestions I have and listen to see if that's what I was searching for. Off and on this has puzzled me for years and thanks to the fine folks here I'm sure I'm closer now then I've ever been.
coda
When I'm drivin' in my car, and the man come on the radio He's tellin' me more and more about some useless information Supposed to fire my imagination When I'm watchin' my TV and a man comes on and tells me How white my shirts can be But, he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke The same cigarettes as me When I'm ridin' round the world And I'm doin' this and I'm signin' that And I'm tryin' to make some girl, who tells me Baby, better come back, maybe next week 'Cause you see I'm on a losing streak I can't get no Oh, no, no, no. Hey, hey, hey That's what I say I can't get no, I can't get no I can't get no, satisfaction No satisfaction No satisfaction, no satisfaction I can't get no Thebes, try here.. thebes
Thanks electric, it's been ordered. Oh yeah, like the Stones too!
garymd
Thebes, Another you may like is Curtis Fuller's Quintet, "Blues-ette." Sort of a combination of blues, jazz and big band rolled into one. Great album and a couple songs at leat meet your criteria. I think you'd like it. Curtis Fuller, trombone Benny Golson, tenor sax Tommy Flanagan, piano Jimmy Garrison, bass Al Harewood, drums
