There is no law against fetal stem cell research. There is a Federal funding limitation. A rich benefactor or foundation could endow the research if they so chose. Umbelical stem cells too are a latent resource.

Some day a compromise may be struck using surplus zygots derived from fertility attempts in lieu of tossing them into the trash.

There is already trade in tissue obtained from abortions even though it is illegal to sell human body parts. Therefor there is no limitation on stem cells.

Sorry cableblacksmith, but you're simply not right. There are no adult stem cells that are low enough on the differentiation tree to do any of this. There is some research conducted where people are trying to convert some of the partially differentiated adult stem cells back into pluripotent ones, but it hasn't been particularly successful so far. The problem is that we don't know enough about fetal stem cells to even try to recreate them and eliminate the need to get them. It's a nasty circle.

The need for fetal stem cells is not just a prop for abortion, it is a genuine hurdle in curing many diseases currently. So much so, that many universities are working on financing their own research. I actually believe California will be the first state to support such efforts.

As for the fact that no laws exist against it, you're absolutely right, but when you realize how expensive basic research is, you'll understand that aside from NIH, there is very few organizations or people who would be willing to finance it.

P.S. Umbilical stem cells are most likely a future resource of pluripotent stem cells be cause they're very close to the original, probably close enough to be reversed (there've been some partially successful experiments).

Sorry... I never should have started down this road.

One of the great lies of the left is that FETAL setm cells are required. The truth is that ADULT stem cells work as well or better. The core of the matter over FETAL anything is that we should not take the lives of those individuals who are giving up the stem cells. FETAL cells are mainly a prop for the abortion industry, an industry that is feeling the pressure of public opinion and morality pressing in.

Really, meuge, as one who is studying to be a doctor, you should know better.

Actually isn't 99% of stem cells actually derived from the umbilical cord between the mother and baby? And isn't the umbilical cord usually tossed away?
