FreeRadical
Can someone tell me how headphone amps are hooked up to a receiver? I have a brand new Pioneer Elite AV 56TXi and would like to buy a really nice set of cans but I'm not sure if I need an external amp. If I do, how do I hook it all up? Timmikid
Usually the headphone amp is connected to an output of the receiver, for instance the tape out, normally used to transfer signal from a source to the tapedeck to make recordings. Take a look at headwize.com. Tim.

marksdad
tim is right, but keep in mind you can only get analog signals this way, so dvd's dont happen
tpg
I am a headphone amp builder... well, was, I suppose. I don't really have time anymore, and also don't ever feel like building an amp. Anyway, once you go amped, you'll probably never go back, especially if you get some cans that NEED an amp. A well-made amp will provide lots more enjoyment than just a receiver headphone output... I believe in simplicity for amps... the less things in the signal path, the better. As such, I'd suggest some Grado headphones with a single-ended MOSFET driver wired for voltage and current gain (like a Pass amp). I don't have either, heh, but believe this combination would sound great. Just a thought... go with what fits.
mike stehr
http://www.firstwatt.com/ Not a headphone amp, maybe one could make a set out of a pair of Lowthers.
