fini
What do folks here think of this set-up, with Khorns? Still trying to get a tube system together, on a bit of a shoe-string. Are they reasonably easy to "bring up to snuff" (compared to other rigs)?
Tom Mobley
HF-81 is pretty simple. I bought a really nasty one as my first tube project. I was able to teach myself to work on this stuff while rebuilding it. If you can turn one up somewhere, I'd go for it. I've replaced a bunch of stuff on mine, it's out in the living room hooked up to my Khorns right now. Sounds pretty good.
Kudret
Hi Fini, I have both of the components you mentioned. Both of these components are very easy to restore. HF86 especially has one of the simplest designs and the fewest components I've seen in a power amp. Kudret
Tom Mobley
fini, I believe the 86 is basically just the power amp stage of the 81, more or less. The 85 is the pre-amp section. I really don't know if there is much to be gained by separates in this case, you could just do an 81. I have accumulated the PS and output trannies for a build project, but never have started on it. If you're interested I could be persuaded to part with them. Or maybe just go ahead and build one for you. Kudret has it right on the simplicity of the 86, but you do need a pre-amp for that. garymd
I think he also wants to know how they sound compared a scott 299 or perhaps a fisher X-100 when all are up to snuff. Actually, I'd like to know also. I've never heard an Eico.
fini
That's a pretty sweet offer, Tom! I will keep that in mind, certainly. I am still anticipating the arrival of the Pilot 232 from Sheltie Dave. Perhaps I wil pick up the HF-85 as a pre for it? I dunno...The seller of the HF-86 and HF-85 is being a bit "incommunicato", which makes me a bit "leery". Also, I am a tad worried about the spelling of the words in quotation marks. fini
Well, I am going to pass on the 85 and 86. A local dude has them ending today on eBay. I emailed him asking for interior shots, and he said he couldn't provide them. I asked if I could drop by and inspect them. No way. So I then asked him if he'd allow me to make the sale conditional on my inspection. Nope. I can only assume he's hiding some flaws, so I won't be bidding. It's too bad, they looked pretty good: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5734130352&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT click on his other items. Tom Mobley
fini, I saw that HF-86, it's by far the nicest looking one I've ever seen available. At 3:24 MST theres a little over an hour left on it, it's only at $203, I predict there's going to be a bunch of late sniper bids on that thing. The pre looks good too. fini
I know! It's too bad the guy isn't being reasonable about giving me more information. You're right, though. It'll probably be bid up pretty high. 10 miles away from me, sheesh!
Tom Mobley
That guy probably knows how nice that thing is and figures he doesn't need to do anything extra to get good bucks for it. I don't blame him in a way. Too bad. I would assume that it'll need power supply caps for safety and coupling caps for sound quality. Not a big deal. fini
WOW! $404!
Marvel
That is one clean looking amp! Usually all dinged up and a bit rusty.
Tom Mobley
Just got back from a Boston Pops concert here in Phonix, looked at that auction. $404 is not that bad for that piece, it was the nicest (visually anyway) one I've ever seen. I was guessing $450.
