ozone_blue
I'm interested in buying a set of ProMedia 4.1's, but I am not sure if they will run on a standard Apple iMac. Would I have to buy a seperate soundcard for the input, or would they work right out of the box? ozone_blue
oogins
Not familiar with Mac's. However, if your soundcard has the mini-stereo outputs, then the PM 4.1's should work just fine. ------------------ -Paul AMD T-Bird 900 Asus A7V Micron 256 MB PC-133 IBM 30 GB 7200 rpm ATA 100 Pioneer DVD-105 Slot-Load (16X/40X) 3Dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP Sound Blaster Live! ozone_blue
The problem is that Macs have soundcards built in. While there are two headphone output jacks, there's only one stereo output jack. Any ideas?
oogins
I was just at the Apple website looking up info on your soundcard. I'm not too sure if hooking up the speakers to the headphone outs would sound all the great. If you only have one output for speakers, I suggest getting the 2.1's. Or you can get an adapter like this . Then you can just plug both the fronts and rears into it. ------------------ -Paul AMD T-Bird 900 Asus A7V Micron 256 MB PC-133 IBM 30 GB 7200 rpm ATA 100 Pioneer DVD-105 Slot-Load (16X/40X) 3Dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP Sound Blaster Live! ozone_blue
I think I'm going to test out the y-plug thing and the headphone thing myself. I have a friend who has a set of 4.1's, and I suppose I'll just have to try hooking them up to my computer and seeing how it sounds. Thanks for all of the help. ozone_blue

ttubbiola
Do the 4.1s use the digital output from the Soundblaster Live?
clandeggen
Only if you have a decoder box, If your talking about direct plug into the Pro Media preamp, then no.
TheEAR
The ProMedia line is compatible with any PC or MAC that has a line out or headphone out. If you get the 4.1's you may only get 2.1 sound with the curent sound card.If you get a Creative Live! for Mac then you can take advantage of the sourround channels. If you use a Y jack its not real sourround you will get only "2x Stereo". ttubbiola
Thanks for the info. I did some research on Creative's and Apple's sites and learned a bit about audio connectivity. I'm not really into games and just want the 4.1s for music playback. How directional are the 4.1s? I'm thinking of one on each end of my desk and the others mounted high on my wall in the corners of the room to enlarge the overall sound. Edited to add that I'm running a G4 450DP tower if that makes a dfference in your advice/opinions. Thanks, Tom This message has been edited by ttubbiola on 10-03-2001 at 12:56 AM
