Coytee
Al, My understanding is the extreme slope networks show a consistent impedence to a Khorn? If the above is (semi) accurate, is it better to use the 4 or 8 ohm or does it REALLY matter?
Al Klappenberger
Yes, The extreme-slope netwroks provide a very constant 6 Ohms to the amp. The ES400 (ES-Khorn) for the Khorn dips to about 4 Ohms right at 400 Hz. I suggest running them on the 4 Ohms outout of your amp if you have impdeance taps. An 8 Ohms setting is ok too though. AL K. Joe Auwen
Al, Would it also be true, with my McIntosh tube amps (MC30,MC40,MC240,MC225), to run them on the amps 4 ohm taps?
Al Klappenberger
Joe, Yes, I would run them on the 4 Ohm tap, but the 8 Ohm tap will do fine too. The amp will see 6 Ohms rather then a wild fluctuation in impedance it would see using other networks. You could say that the 8 Ohms tap never had it so good! Al K. Al Klappenberger
Guys, Here's a actual impedance plot of an early version ES-Khorn (ES400 + ES5800) network set. The design was later modified to drop down to about 4.5 or 5 Ohms at 400 Hz to flatten the 400 Hz crossover just a bit. In a speaker, you will also see the resonance peaks of the K33 woofer when the woofer horn unloads donw arund 30 Gz or so. It looks very much the same otherwise. As you can see it's a very flat resistive impedance all the way. AL K.
Deang
With tube gear, you really just have to try it both ways and see. One way will sound "right", and the other way won't.
