shload
Looking for thoughts on some nice pure class A amps. I'm looking at Forte model 1 or 4 and maybe a Krell KSA50. Are there others in this range I should be looking for. I have no need for any more power than this. Thanks for your thoughts. Joe
crazytubepower
For about $400-500 you can get an aragon 2004 100wpc pure class A, designed by krell! Great value
Duke Spinner
how about the Sumo #9 ..... used about $
Speedball
Maybe Monarchy amps?
gullahisland
At the upper end of the price range is the venerable Classe DR-3 and DR-3-VHC (for very high current). At the lower end of the price range is, as you have suggested, the Forte Model 4 or 4A (the "A" has balanced outputs). Either way, you'll have one of the very finest solid state amps around...regardless of price. They're both masterpieces.

Great value ---------------- I'm pretty certain that this is NOT pure class A. It might be AB, heavily biased toward A. The 4004 is the 200wpc version and it is DEFINITELY NOT class A. edwinr
How about the Sugden range. The A21a and the A21aSE are both fine sounding Class A amplifiers. I haven't heard them with Klipsch though.
jbsl
I have two Monarchy Audio SM 70 pros. They are 80 watt monoblocks or 35 watt stereo amps. When I get home I'll post some pics and price. What kind of preamp do you have? Xman
Speedball
Also a used Pass Aleph.
shload
The Monarchy amps are one's that had also been mentioned as something good to take a look at. I'm hoping to use my Mod Squad Line Drive deluxe with whatever I get. I might go take a look at a Krell KSA 50s. Thanks for all the info. gullahisland
With that Deluxe Line Drive, you'll need to be careful about mating it with an amp that has sufficient output voltage. It's a TRUE passive preamp. Be careful and good luck.
aviserated
Been there done that "Screw class A". Buy B&K seperates, you will love the remote tone/volume/tuner controls.
Klipsch RF7
Definatley the Monarchy Class A mono blocs are great!! Cannot beat them for the money.
shload
Well I drove down to DC today and picked up a pair of Forte Model 7 monoblocks. It's early but they seem to be working OK with the Modsquad passive. 2 sides of vinyl and some Cd, shows a huge stage with everything sounding more real or live. A little laid back, but for me that is a good thing. I took these over a Sugden and the Monarchy amps. Always fun to get new "Stuff" Joe
Mark Hardy
The better models of the venerable Yamaha integrated amps could be switched to run in Class A. Inefficient as heck, of course, and hot as blazes, but fine sounding in that mode. If you like ss ;-) EDIT: The "normal/Class A" OPERATION switch in the CA-1010 in the photo is barely visible to the right of the speaker selector... looks to be in "Class A", to boot! http://www.thevintageknob.org/YAMAHA/CA1010/CA1010.html
dgb
This Marantz number looks pretty sweet for the price. 85w or 25w class A integrated amp with phono and tape loop (far from a given these days). http://www.amusicdirect.com/products/detail.asp?sku=AMARAPM7200
