ARPRINCE
So what were you listening with? Sony Headphones. I'll try later without the headphones and see what I come up with.
michael hurd
Looks like we have a crowd with some pretty decent ears for distortion.[]

DrWho
My problem was I could easily tell a difference, but had no clue which was correct. Anybody else have this problem? I really wish I had a better recording to do the test on....

formica
Ok... here goes a couplethese were done with Beyerdynamic headphones directly off the "built in" soundcard. The sound card is a little weak (or perhaps the headphones are a little inefficient) but it gave me pretty good results. BTW, I don't have golden ears... formica
I wasn't overly familiar with the piece of music (that's a woman?!?) but I found that the first series of samples give a good idea what to expect. Maybe that was a fluke... so I tried the Octave test... but I found that quite a bit harder. The pure tone is more annoying, so less people go through with it, but notice how the scores are "either you get it or don't"? I'm sure there was some luck on this one... formica
I was on a roll... and I was curious what difference the headphone versus computer speakers with room noise made... so I also ran the octave test with my Altec comp speakers. My double computer fan noise definitely became a factor as the db's dropped. Goes to show you how a "quiet" room will provide better sound reproduction. Later... NOSValves
Never got a chance to mess with it yesterday on my main system. But this morning I redid it on my PC speakers. I paid very close attention to the falling edge of the bass notes and did very well. Distorted bass will always sound like more fuller, longer bass notes. The biggest problem I think is the same track over and over just seems to become too familiar. I reran the test after this first very careful run and couldn't come close to repeating the results. Or is it just boredom?
michael hurd
I think that it has a lot to do if you are already fatigued, and also the mood you are in, and whether or not you can concentrate. ( background noise, etc )
