Shade
Those old SX model Pioneers were/are pretty good. Still have a SX-780 & a SX-1050. As mentioned earlier, the volume pots are a PITA. Sealed up inside a plastic box, almost impossible to clean very well. Had to change the volume pot on my 1050 a while back. Also, in case anyone's curious about the model #s, for the most part the SX models ending in 80 have watt meters, and the ones ending in 50 do not. Ex. A SX-1050 has no meters, where a SX-1080 does. Otherwise they're identical.
Dave in ABQ
Pioneer made some great gear from the early 1970's til the very early 1980's. I've had my 1978 SX-950 for a couple of years and I love it. Sound is very detailed and robust. 85 WPC, but more like 120 by todays watered down mass market ratings. The beast weights over 45 pounds and was built to last. Here's a link of some vaulations, data, and some pictures. http://www.classicaudio.com/value/pio/index.html Hope your's turns out to be a nice unit. EVGuy
As an owner of an SX-1280, I can tell you they are amazing! More pure power than you'll ever need, but I still would rather have the SX-1980, just because it's a better model.
