Bonzo
Thanks D-MAN for being the voice of reason! I believe you hit the nail on the head!
oscarsear
This little thread is quite interesting for me. I told D Man last week that I'd ordered slate caps to sit atop my Khorn bass bins. The top horns will be exposed and I needed something to cover the bass bins with and sit those horns on. Well those slate caps will weigh in at over 100 lbs each. Then I've got 25 lb JBL 2482 mid-range drivers to add to the mass. In all it's probably twice the weight of the standard khorn upper section. Thumpelstiltskin
Cest moi! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1299/sandbagging.htm it works, and for very good reasons "I hefted the bags up on to the 2 1/5 foot wide tops of my old Klipsch horn loaded Cornerwalls. I listened for tone and contrasts by alternating the bags on and off." Cornerwall? Rick.
Parrot
I think arguably better is doing what I did. I used a couple bottles of Gorilla Glue and attached my Khorns to the corners--walls and floor.

cmdridq
Lead shot should be sealed well enough to keep curious pets and children from getting access to it. Very toxic. Sand works fine and is cheaper and safer.
tofu
Want to add mass to the speaker? Why not do what I did? I secured my Khorns to the friggin' foundation of the house with 18 lag bolts! Now they're mechanically coupled to the mass of the Earth. Can't do much better than that. [] And yes, it did make an improvement, mostly in the middle & treble registers, not the bass range like I thought it would. would anyone mind explaining to me how bolting a khorn down would improve anything but the bass bin? i'm not seeing how the squawker horn and tweeter could benefit from this
DrWho
would anyone mind explaining to me how bolting a khorn down would improve anything but the bass bin? i'm not seeing how the squawker horn and tweeter could benefit from this The reduction of cabinet vibration means the squakers and tweeters are moving less too. And any reduction ultimately results in less frequency modulation distortion (aka doppler distortion). Also, the "quality" of LF information dramatically affects the percieved midrange. Think about it....we can describe a "bass shy" speaker as sounding "harsh." It has everything to do with how the lower frequencies modulate the higher frequencies - cut out the low end and you are physically changing the waveform of the upper frequencies. tofu
you're always around to give great explanations. thanks again.
j-malotky
I'm helping design a new basement HT where the front wall will incorporate false corners for the Khorns angling the Khorns to point to the first row sweet spot. We are planning on mass loading the false corner section by filling the stud spaces with sand and screwing the khorns to the false corners. The result should be somewhat simular to Art's earth mount.
